  1. 21. Galectin Inhibitors – Molecular Tools in Biomedical Research and Clinical Implications

    Författare :John Stegmayr; immunologi och glykobiologi - MIG Avdelningen för mikrobiologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; galectins; inhibitors; evaluation assays; cell culture; idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis; synthetic small-molecule galectin inhibitors; plant-derived polysaccharides;

    Sammanfattning : Galectins are β-galactoside-binding lectins, which are present in both the intracellular and extracellular environments of cells. During the last two decades, galectins have gained increasing interest as drug targets in various diseases, such as chronic inflammation (fibrosis) and cancer, in which galectins have been shown to play important, and sometimes rate-limiting, roles. 2. 22. Synthesis of Non-Natural Aromatic Amino Acids Derivatives Solvent-free reactions-Versatile building blocks-Galectin inhibitors

    Författare :Erik Tullberg; Centrum för analys och syntes; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Organisk kemi; Organic chemistry; Naturvetenskap; Natural science; Multivalent galectin inhibitors; Multifunctional molecules; Amino Acids; Solvent-free reactions;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with three topics concerning the synthesis of non-natural also known as unnatural amino acid derivatives. In the first, solvent-free reaction conditions for the Heck reaction were developed that were superior to previous conditions because the reaction time could be reduced and the work-up procedure simplified. 3. 23. Small-Molecule Galectin Inhibitors - On Tweezers and Talosides

    Författare :Christopher Öberg; Centrum för analys och syntes; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : Abstract Work on the design, synthesis, and biological evaluation of galectin inhibitors is presented. The most significant results relate to the development of galactose-based arginine “tweezers” and taloside-based galectin inhibitors. The galectins are a β-galactoside binding protein family. Författare :Johan Wallerstein; Biofysikalisk kemi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Chemical exchange; Conformational entropy; Entropy; Galectin-3; Isothermal Titration Calorimetry; ITC; Model-free formalism; Molecular recognition; Nuclear Magnetic Resonance; NMR; PGB1; Protein dynamics; Protein–ligand interactions; Proton-transfer reactions; Spin relaxation; Viscosity; Chemical exchange; Conformational entropy; Entropy; Galectin-3; Isothermal Titration Calorimetry; ITC; Model-free formalism; Molecular recognition; Nuclear Magnetic Resonance; NMR; PGB1; Protein dynamics; Protein–ligand interactions; Proton-transfer reactions; Spin relaxation; Viscosity;

    Sammanfattning : Knowledge of dynamics in protein is very important in the description of protein function and molecular recognition. The thesis investigates protein dynamics on time-scales from milli- to sub-nanosecond, with focus on the latter, using NMR spin relaxation experiments on two proteins, the 138-residue carbohydrate recognition domain of galectin-3 (Gal3C) and the 56-residue B1 domain of bacterial protein G (PGB1). 5. 25. Functional and Phenotypic Studies of Eosinophilic Granulocytes in Patients with Eosinophilic Esophagitis

    Författare :Christine Lingblom; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; adults; children; corticosteroids; eosinophils; eosinophilic esophagitis; FOXP3; galectin-10; inflammation; T cell suppression;

    Sammanfattning : Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE) is a chronic inflammatory disorder of unknown etiology, in which the esophagus is infiltrated by eosinophils and T cells. Topical corticosteroids are one of the treatment options for patients with EoE. The function of eosinophils in EoE is unknown, here we hypothesize that eosinophils serve as immunoregulatory cells.
