31. Computational Studies of the Temperature Dependence of Enzyme Catalysis
Sammanfattning : Enzymes are known to adapt to low temperatures by lowering the enthalpy of activation of the key reaction steps. A lesser known property of some psychrophilic (cold-active) enzymes is an anomalous temperature optimum. LÄS MER
32. Inflammatory activation of the kynurenine pathway : studies with lipopolysaccharides
Sammanfattning : Neuroinflammation is increasingly recognised as playing an important role in several major psychiatric disorders. The mechanisms by which neuroinflammation influences neurotransmitter systems have for long been unknown. LÄS MER
33. The Plasma Contact System : New Functional Insights from a Hemostatic and Thrombotic Perspective
Sammanfattning : The physiological role of the plasma contact system still remains a partial enigma. The aim of the presented work was to expand our understanding of the plasma contact system, focusing on its physiological activation and function, principally from a hemostatic perspective. It also explored contact system activation under pathological conditions. LÄS MER
34. Bridging immune activation with the kynurenine pathway : implications for psychosis
Sammanfattning : Kynurenic acid (KYNA), an endogenous N-Methyl-D-aspartic acid receptor (NMDAR) antagonist, is elevated in patients with schizophrenia. In addition, elevated levels of KYNA are associated with activation of the immune system, which also has been implicated in the development and maintenance of psychotic disorders, including schizophrenia. 35. Theoretical studies of mononuclear non-heme iron active sites
Sammanfattning : The quantum chemical investigations presented in this thesis use hybrid density functional theory to shed light on the catalytic mechanisms of mononuclear non-heme iron oxygenases, accommodating a ferrous ion in their active sites. More specifically, the dioxygen activation process and the subsequent oxidative reactions in the following enzymes were studied: tetrahydrobiopterin-dependent hydroxylases, naphthalene 1,2-dioxygenase and α-ketoglutarate-dependent enzymes.
