1. Simulations of ultrafast photon-matter interactions for molecular imaging with X-ray lasers
Sammanfattning : Biological structure determination has had new avenues of investigation opened due to the introduction of X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs). These X-ray lasers provide an extreme amount of photons on ultrafast timescales used to probe matter, and in particular biomolecules. LÄS MER
2. Solving Mysteries and Outwitting Transitions : Investigating the Incommensurate Crystal Structures of AuIn and Sn3Sb2
Sammanfattning : This thesis introduces two new incommensurate alloys. AuIn shows variable amounts of modulation, depending on the measurement temperature. At 400°C the diffraction pattern shows diffuse scattering and a thallium iodide type Cmcm space group. LÄS MER
3. Advances in Biomolecular Imaging with X-ray Free-Electron Lasers
Sammanfattning : Utilizing X-rays to solve molecular structures has proven to be an immensely powerful and im- portant scientific technique. The invention of X-ray crystallography has allowed for countless breakthroughs in chemistry, biology and material science and remains the number one method used for structural determination today. 4. Crystallography in Four Dimensions : Methods and Applications
Sammanfattning : The four-electron reduction of dioxygen to water is the most exothermic non-photochemical reaction available to biology. A detailed molecular description of this reaction is needed to understand oxygen-based redox processes. Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) is a haem-containing redox enzyme capable of catalysing the reduction of dioxygen to water. LÄS MER
5. Glypican-1: Structural and functional analysis of the N-glycosylated human protein
Sammanfattning : Glypicans are multifunctional cell surface heparan sulphate proteoglycans co-regulating numerous signalling pathways, and are thereby involved in the control of cellular division, differentiation, and morphogenesis. The heparan sulphate (HS) chains are responsible for many of those biological functions; nevertheless recent studies suggest functional roles for the glypican core proteins in mediating the signalling of various growth factors.
