  1. 6. The hippocampal opioid system : role in spatial learning

    Författare :Johan Sandin; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :opioid; dynorphin; nociceptin; hippocampus; learning; memory; acetylcholine; HPLC; microinjections;

    Sammanfattning : The main aim of the present thesis was to study the role of the endogenous hippocampal opioid system, and in particular, the role of dynorphin B and nociceptin, in spatial learning. The effects of bilateral infusion (using chronic cannulae) of dynorphin B into the dorsal hippocampus (CA3-region), an area containing a high number of dynorphin-containing neurons, were examined in the Morris swim-maze, a spatial task dependent on hippocampal functioning. 2. 7. Hippocampal galanin and acetylcholine in spatial learning

    Författare :Pär A Schött; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :hippocampus; galanin; acetylcholine; memory and learning; swim maze; microinjections; HPLC;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of the present thesis was to study how the neuropeptide galanin affects the neurochemistry and functional activity of the cholinergic septohippocampal projection, which plays a pivotal role in learning and memory. This cholinergic system is strongly impaired in Alzheimer's disease and in age-related dementias. LÄS MER

  3. 8. Expression of stimulatory and inhibitory molecules in interactions between natural killer cells neurons

    Författare :Eva Backström; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Nervous system; brain; neuron; NK cells; dorsal root ganglia; hippocampus; NKG2D; RAE 1; MULT1; nerve lesion; influenza virus; MCMV.;

    Sammanfattning : Natural killer (NK) cells are important effector cells of the innate and the early induced immune defense. In the nervous system they appear early during inflammation and have been ascribed a role in clearance of certain viral infections from the brain. NK cells are regulated by multiple signals transmitted via inhibitory and stimulatory receptors. LÄS MER

  4. 9. Modulation of pain by immune factors : a study on interferon-g and its receptor in nociceptive transmission

    Författare :Kristina S Vikman; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Cytokines; interferon-gamma; dorsal horn; hypersensitivity; nociceptive transmission; pain; GluR1; AMPA receptor; disinhibition; spontaneous activity; primary cell culture; two-compartment model; spinal cord.;

    Sammanfattning : Immune cytokines have been implicated as important neuromodulators, contributing to neuronal plasticity both in the adult and developing nervous system. In addition, they have been assigned a potential role in the generation of pathological pain, which may occur as a severe symptom following disease states in the nervous system. LÄS MER

  5. 10. 5-HT1A receptor ligands with putative antidepressant activity : pharmacological studies in the rat

    Författare :Lotta Arborelius; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :antidepressants; citalopram; dopamine; dorsal raphe nucleus; electrophysiology; frontal cortex; 5-HT; A receptors; microdialysis; serotonin; rat;

    Sammanfattning : Several studies suggest that serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT)IA receptor agonists possess antidepressant activity. Probably these agents exert their therapeutic effect through stimulation of postsynaptic 5-HT,A receptors. LÄS MER
