11. Serotonergic receptor subtypes in learning and memory : focus on 5-HT1A, 5-HT1B and 5-HT2A receptors
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to study how serotonin (5-HT) receptor subtypes can influence hippocampus/amygdala-dependent teaming and memory using the water maze (WM) and the passive avoidance (PA) tasks in rodents, and to provide a cellular correlate to the behavioral results using histochemical methods. Glutamatergic neurons in the trisynaptic circuit of the hippocampus are believed to be important for spatial teaming and memory as well as synaptic plasticity. LÄS MER
12. The aging frontal lobe in health and disease : a structural magnetic resonance imaging study
Sammanfattning : Cortical and subcortical regions of the brain decrease in volume in normal as well as pathological aging. Previous studies indicate that certain parts of the brain, like the prefrontal cortex, may be particularly vulnerable to age-related processes which are manifested by significant volume loss in this region. 13. Neuroactive steroids and rat CNS
Sammanfattning : Several studies suggest profound effects on mood and cognition by neuroactive steroids. Estrogen alone or in combination with antidepressant drugs affecting the serotonin system has been used to treat mood disorders. On the other hand, progesterone is related to negative effects on mood and memory. LÄS MER
14. Galanin : Studies by Modification of the Ligand and the Receptor
Sammanfattning : This thesis is devoted to the deeper understanding of the molecular details of the interaction between the neuropeptide galanin and its target protein, the G-protein coupled 7TM galanin receptor. The enzymatic control of galanin degradation and second messenger systems triggered by galanin receptor activation are also studied. LÄS MER
15. Brain galanin sytems and their role in depression-like behaviour
Sammanfattning : The aim of the present thesis was to investigate the role of the neuropeptide galanin and galanin receptor subtypes in behavioural functions with a particular focus on depression-like behaviour. In agreement with its wide distribution in the central nervous system, galanin has been implicated in various functions, including regulation of reproduction, endocrine functions, antinociception, attention, learning and memory as well as regulation of mood.
