  1. 1. 5-HT1A receptor ligands with putative antidepressant activity : pharmacological studies in the rat

    Författare :Lotta Arborelius; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :antidepressants; citalopram; dopamine; dorsal raphe nucleus; electrophysiology; frontal cortex; 5-HT; A receptors; microdialysis; serotonin; rat;

    Sammanfattning : Several studies suggest that serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT)IA receptor agonists possess antidepressant activity. Probably these agents exert their therapeutic effect through stimulation of postsynaptic 5-HT,A receptors. LÄS MER

  2. 2. On the mechanisms of action of atypical antipsychotic drugs : an experimental study

    Författare :Peter Hertel; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :antipsychotic drugs; dopamine; serotonin; medial prefrontal cortex; dorsal raphe nucleus; risperidone; clozapine; idazoxan; [alpha]2 adrenoceptors; conditioned avoidance; catalepsy;

    Sammanfattning : A majority of schizophrenic patients respond to classical neuroleptic drugs which are believed to act largely via blockade of dopamine (DA) D2 receptors in limbic structures. However, a significant proportion do not respond to conventional D2 receptor blocking drugs or show a rather incomplete therapeutic effect, particularly on negative and cognitive symptoms. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Galanin receptor subtypes in rodent models of mood disorders

    Författare :Tara Wardi-Le Maitre; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :5-HT1A receptor; galanin; galanin receptor 2 overexpressing mice; locus coeruleus; dorsal raphe; depression-like behavior; forced swim test;

    Sammanfattning : Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a serious mental illness, with a complex etiology. It is a multifactorial disorder caused by a combination of genetic, environmental and epigenetic factors. Exposure to stressful life events seems to be a common, contributing cause of morbidity. 4. 4. Brain control of energy balance : localization and regulation of proteins involved in the central control of food intake and body weight

    Författare :Maria Collin; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :AGRP; arcuate nucleus; brainstem; CART; GABA; Glutamate; GPCR; habenular complex; immunohistochemistry; in situ hybridization; hypothalamus; leptin; leptin receptor; LHA; MCH; NPY; Ob-Rb; POMC; serotonin; STAT3; transporter; ventromedial hypothalamic nucleus; VGLUT1-3.;

    Sammanfattning : Obesity has become a worldwide threat to human well-being and is now so common that it is beginning to replace undernutrition and infectious disease as the most significant contributor to ill health. Obesity increases the risk for aquiring serious diseases such as diabetes type 2, hypertension, coronary heart disease and certain forms of cancer. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Neuropeptides, 'gaseous' messengers and classic transmitters : electrophysiological and histochemical studies on coexistence and interactions in the nervous system

    Författare :Zhi-Qing David Xu; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Dorsal root ganglion; galanin; hippocampus; 5-hydroxytryptamine; locus coeruleus; nerve injury; nitric oxide; noradrenaline.;

    Sammanfattning : The distribution and functional role of neuropeptides were studied, with special reference to galanin (GAL) and the free radical nitric oxide (NO). In developing systems GAL expression was observed already at E14 in trigeminal and dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons and at E15 in sensory epithelia in ear, eye and nose, as well as at E19 during bone formation.
