  1. 1. Neuroactive steroids and rat CNS

    Författare :Vita Birzniece; Bo Söderpalm; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Estradiol; progesterone; HRT; allopregnanolone; UC1011; serotonin receptor; GABAA receptor; mRNA; Morris water maze; silent second; tolerance; Clinical Neurophysiology; klinisk neurofysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Several studies suggest profound effects on mood and cognition by neuroactive steroids. Estrogen alone or in combination with antidepressant drugs affecting the serotonin system has been used to treat mood disorders. On the other hand, progesterone is related to negative effects on mood and memory. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Hippocampal galanin and acetylcholine in spatial learning

    Författare :Pär A Schött; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :hippocampus; galanin; acetylcholine; memory and learning; swim maze; microinjections; HPLC;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of the present thesis was to study how the neuropeptide galanin affects the neurochemistry and functional activity of the cholinergic septohippocampal projection, which plays a pivotal role in learning and memory. This cholinergic system is strongly impaired in Alzheimer's disease and in age-related dementias. LÄS MER

  3. 3. The hippocampal opioid system : role in spatial learning

    Författare :Johan Sandin; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :opioid; dynorphin; nociceptin; hippocampus; learning; memory; acetylcholine; HPLC; microinjections;

    Sammanfattning : The main aim of the present thesis was to study the role of the endogenous hippocampal opioid system, and in particular, the role of dynorphin B and nociceptin, in spatial learning. The effects of bilateral infusion (using chronic cannulae) of dynorphin B into the dorsal hippocampus (CA3-region), an area containing a high number of dynorphin-containing neurons, were examined in the Morris swim-maze, a spatial task dependent on hippocampal functioning. 4. 4. Neurotoxicity of methylmercury : analysis of molecular mechanisms and behavioral alterations

    Författare :Elisabetta Daré; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Apoptosis; oxidative stress; neurons; glia; rats; dopamine; locomotion; learning and memory; environmental pollutants;

    Sammanfattning : MethyImercury (MeHg) is a global pollutant that is toxic for the nervous system, especially during development. Contaminated fish is the main route of human exposure. Recent studies have indicated that neurological alterations in humans may occur even after exposure to fairly low levels of MeHg. LÄS MER

  5. 5. On Nogo signaling regulation

    Författare :Alexandra Trifunovski; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Nogo; Nogo receptor; regulation; neurotrophin; Lingo-1; p75NTR; Troy; synaptic plasticity;

    Sammanfattning : As neuronal development enters its final stages, axon growth becomes restricted. This lack of regenerative capacity is partly due to the non-permissive environment of growth inhibitory proteins. Three such proteins, Nogo, OMgp and MAG bind to the same receptor, the Nogo receptor (NgR) and induce growth cone collapse and axon growth inhibition. LÄS MER
