21. Molecular Evolution of the Vertebrate Genome
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, I studied molecular evolution of the vertebrate genome, focusing on sex chromosomes, protein coding genes, and genome size variation. The evolutionary history of avian sex chromosomes was analyzed by comparing substitution rate among 12 gametologous gene pairs on the Z and W chromosomes. LÄS MER
22. Estrogen receptor beta transcriptional regulation: A potential mechanism for colon cancer prevention
Sammanfattning : Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third leading cause of death from cancer in both men andwomen in the Western world. Improved screening efforts, surveillance, and treatment havereduced CRC mortality in older patients. However, the incidence is increasing in young adults, even in the absence of CRC family history. 23. Morphologican and functional studies on the Drosophila neuromuscular system during postembryonic stages
Sammanfattning : The nervous system of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster has emerged as an excellent model for fundamental neuroscience as well as for biomedical research of human neurological diseases. In this thesis, two aspects of the neuromuscular system have been investigated: the role of the IkB-protein Cactus in the larval neuromuscular junction and the morphology of motor terminals throughout adult life. 24. Crosstalk between environmental signals and 3d genome organization in the regulation of gene expression
Sammanfattning : The thesis explores the connection between environmental stimuli and gene expression regulated by the spatial changes in genome organization. In Paper I, by applying state of the art Circular Chromosome Conformation Capture assay (4C) and Chromatin in situ Proximity (ChrISP) techniques, we show that transcriptionally active circadian genes meet in space with repressed lamina-associated domains (LADs), and that these interactions are under the control of the circadian clock. 25. Reconciling gene family evolution and species evolution
Sammanfattning : Species evolution can often be adequately described with a phylogenetic tree. Interestingly, this is the case also for the evolution of homologous genes; a gene in an ancestral species may – through gene duplication, gene loss, lateral gene transfer (LGT), and speciation events – give rise to a gene family distributed across contemporaneous species.
