1. BIOACTIVE ORGANOMETALLIC COMPOUNDS
Sammanfattning : Various metal complexes have been used in medicine traditionally, although their use was often connected with mystery and with a lack of empirically (clinically) proven effect. In modern times, the development of biochemistry, bioinorganic and bioorganometallic chemistry allows us more in-depth understanding of biological action of metal containing substances. LÄS MER
2. Expanded knowledge on silk assembly for development of bioactive silk coatings
Sammanfattning : Silk is a fascinating natural material made from proteins that self-assemble through structural rearrangements into one of the toughest materials known. As silk is protein-based, durable and elastic, it has many features that makes it suitable as a scaffold material for tissue engineering. LÄS MER
3. Understanding Composition–Structure–Bioactivity Correlations in Bioactive Glasses
Sammanfattning : Bioactive glasses integrate with bone/tooth tissues by forming a layer of hydroxy-carbonate apatite (HCA), which mimics the composition of bone mineral. In the current thesis, we investigated composition–structure–bioactivity correlations of phosphosilicate and borophosphosilicate (BPS) glasses. LÄS MER
4. Bioactive Lipids in Nociception
Sammanfattning : This thesis focuses on bioactive lipids as (1) metabolites of the widely used antipyretic and analgesic drug acetaminophen and (2) activators of the ion channel TRPV1, an important downstream target for inflammatory mediators, in the phospholipase C (PLC)/TRPV1 signaling pathway. Evidence is presented for a fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH)-dependent fatty acid conjugation of p-aminophenol, a known acetaminophen metabolite, to form the potent TRPV1 activator AM404 in the central nervous system. 5. Exploring medical applications of a bioactive polymer
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, we have studied a polymeric compound called PVAC, designed as a scavenger of reactive electrophilic substances. We explored several diseases where these substances are overproduced. In Paper I, adhesion formation was induced via bowel anastomosis surgery in rats. LÄS MER
