6. Phytoplankton and bacterioplankton dynamics in a polymictic tropical lake
Sammanfattning : Phytoplankton and bacterioplankton dynamics in lakes are regulated by a multitude of factors such as light, temperature, water column mixing, nutrients, organic substrates, grazing, and food web structure. Tropical lakes are especially interesting to study because of the relative constancy of several of these factors. LÄS MER
7. Copepods in Skeletonema-dominated food webs : Toxicity and nutritional quality as factors controlling copepod-diatom interactions
Sammanfattning : My thesis focuses on copepod-diatom interactions, specifically on the effects of food quality and toxicity on copepod feeding, reproductive success and behavior but as a frame, also includes a quantitative evaluation of copepod carbon requirements compared to other trophic plankton groups. My aim was to evaluate the function of copepods in diatom-dominated spring blooms. LÄS MER
8. Molecular mechanisms involved in prokaryotic cycling of labile dissolved organic matter in the sea
Sammanfattning : Roughly half of the global primary production originates from microscopic phytoplankton in marine ecosystems, converting carbon dioxide into organic matter. This organic matter pool consists of a myriad of compounds that fuel heterotrophic bacterioplankton. LÄS MER
9. The role of crustacean zooplankton in pelagic nutrient cycling
Sammanfattning : Herbivorous crustacean zooplankton link phytoplankton and other microorganisms withhigher trophic levels in pelagic food webs. Crustaceans show little intraspecificvariation in somatic C:N:P elemental ratios, which may have implications for theregulation of zooplankton growth and for nutrient cycling. LÄS MER
10. Trophic complexity of zooplankton–cyanobacteria interactions in the Baltic Sea : Insights from molecular diet analysis
Sammanfattning : Blooms of nitrogen fixing cyanobacteria (NFC) occur in many freshwater and marine systems, including the Baltic Sea. By fixing dissolved nitrogen, they circumvent general summer nitrogen limitation, while also generating a supply of novel bioavailable nitrogen for non-diazotrophic primary producers and ultimately supporting secondary production.
