  1. 16. Mutual neutralisation reactions in atmospheric and industrial plasmas

    Författare :Mathias Poline; Richard D. Thomas; Jan Pettersson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; DESIREE; mutual neutralisation; ion storage; ion collisions; Physics; fysik;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with experimental studies of electron transfer reactions between oppositely charged ions (mutual neutralisation). These were performed at the unique double electrostatic ion storage ring DESIREE at Stockholm University, which was put into full operation in 2017. LÄS MER

  2. 17. Bright Needles in a Haystack : A Search for Magnetic Monopoles Using the IceCube Neutrino Observatory

    Författare :Alexander Burgman; Carlos Pérez de los Heros; Olga Botner; Allan Hallgren; David Milstead; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; magnetic monopole; IceCube; astroparticle physics; neutrino telescope; Fysik med inriktning mot elementarpartikelfysik; Physics with specialization in Elementary Particle Physics;

    Sammanfattning : The IceCube Neutrino Observatory at the geographic South Pole is designed to detect the light produced by the daughter-particles of in-ice neutrino-nucleon interactions, using one cubic kilometer of ice instrumented with more than 5000 optical sensors.Magnetic monopoles are hypothetical particles with non-zero magnetic charge, predicted to exist in many extensions of the Standard Model of particle physics. 3. 18. Low-Energy Ion Escape from the Terrestrial Polar Regions

    Författare :Erik Engwall; Anders I. Eriksson; Mats André; Thomas Moore; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; space physics; ion outflow; polar wind; auroral upflows; atmospheric escape; magnetotail lobes; spacecraft wake; electric field measurements; Geocosmophysics and plasma physics; Geokosmofysik och plasmafysik; Space and Plasma Physics; rymd- och plasmafysik;

    Sammanfattning : The contemporary terrestrial atmosphere loses matter at a rate of around 100,000 tons per year. A major fraction of the net mass loss is constituted by ions, mainly H+ and O+, which escape from the Earth’s ionosphere in the polar regions. LÄS MER

  4. 19. Exploring the Universe Using Neutrinos : A Search for Point Sources in the Southern Hemisphere Using the IceCube Neutrino Observatory

    Författare :Rickard Ström; Allan Hallgren; Olga Botner; Chad Finley; Lawrence R. Sulak; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; astroparticle physics; neutrino sources; neutrino telescopes; IceCube; Fysik med inriktning mot elementarpartikelfysik; Physics with specialization in Elementary Particle Physics;

    Sammanfattning : Neutrinos are the ideal cosmic messengers, and can be used to explore the most powerful accelerators in the Universe, in particular the mechanisms for producing and accelerating cosmic rays to incredible energies. By studying clustering of neutrino candidate events in the IceCube detector we can discover sites of hadronic acceleration. LÄS MER

  5. 20. Development of laser spectroscopy for scattering media applications

    Författare :Mats Andersson; Atomfysik; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Laserteknik; Laser technology; Atom- och molekylärfysik; Atomic and molecular physics; Fysik; Physics; coherent sampling; optical sensor; light absorption; noninvasive measurement; diode laser; scattering of light; laser spectroscopy; fluorescence spectroscopy; remote sensing; Lidar; DIAL;

    Sammanfattning : Laser spectroscopy for both large and small spatial scales has been developed and used in various applications ranging from remote monitoring of atmospheric mercury in Spain to investigation of oxygen contents in wood, human sinuses, fruit, and pharmaceutical solids. Historically, the lidar group in Lund has performed many differential absorption lidar (DIAL) measurements with a mobile lidar system that was first described in 1987. LÄS MER
