  2. 2. Low-Energy Ion Escape from the Terrestrial Polar Regions

    Författare :Erik Engwall; Anders I. Eriksson; Mats André; Thomas Moore; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; space physics; ion outflow; polar wind; auroral upflows; atmospheric escape; magnetotail lobes; spacecraft wake; electric field measurements; Geocosmophysics and plasma physics; Geokosmofysik och plasmafysik; Space and Plasma Physics; rymd- och plasmafysik;

    Sammanfattning : The contemporary terrestrial atmosphere loses matter at a rate of around 100,000 tons per year. A major fraction of the net mass loss is constituted by ions, mainly H+ and O+, which escape from the Earth’s ionosphere in the polar regions. LÄS MER

  3. 3. The Polar Cusp and its Ionospheric footprint : Dynamics and Transients

    Författare :Frédéric Pitout; Ryoichi Fujii; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Space and plasma physics; Solar wind - magnetosphere - ionosphère interactions; polar ionosphere; Rymd- och plasmafysik; Space physics; Rymdfysik; Space Physics; rymdfysik;

    Sammanfattning : The magnetopause, the boundary layer between the solar wind and the Earth’s magnetosphere, is not closed as we have long thought. Transfers of energy, particles and momentum from the solar wind to the magnetosphere actually take place. LÄS MER

  4. 4. The zoo-geomorphological impact of fossorial rodents in sub-polar alpine environments

    Författare :Bert Eriksson; Jan Boelhowers; John Östh; Hanna Ridefelt; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; zoo-geomorphology; fossorial rodents; sub-polar; alpine; geomorphic work; ecosystem engineers; Physical geography; Naturgeografi; Geography; Geografi;

    Sammanfattning : The geomorphological impact of small fossorial mammals (adapted to digging and living underground), such as rodents can be significant, and both their direct and indirect effects may contribute to landscape formation. This thesis is based on empirical field studies of two burrowing rodent species in sub-polar environments, namely invasive House mice (Mus musculus) on sub-Antarctic Marion Island and Norwegian lemmings (Lemmus lemmus) in sub-Arctic Abisko. 5. 5. Energization and Acceleration of Dayside Polar Outflowing Oxygen

    Författare :Sachiko Arvelius; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Solar wind-magnetosphere interactions; Magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling; O energization acceleration; O outflow; Space physics; Rymdfysik;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with energetic oxygen ions (i.e. single-charged atomic oxygen ions, O+) at altitudes higher than 5 Earth radii (RE) and at latitudes above 75 (toward 90) degrees invariant latitude (deg ILAT) in the dayside polar magnetosphere observed by Cluster. LÄS MER
