21. Molecular mechanisms of the kidney in health and disease
Sammanfattning : In 2010, 307 Swedish patients received a new kidney through transplantation, and the first of April 2011, 603 patients were on the kidney transplant waiting list. In Sweden over 8000 patients are presently in active uremic care with about half in dialysis and the other half with a functional kidney graft. LÄS MER
22. Preparatory Studies to Introduce Regulatory T Cells in Clinical Transplantation
Sammanfattning : Solid organ transplantation has evolved from being an experimental procedure to a life-saving treatment for patients with end-stage organ failure. The risk of losing a transplant due to acute rejection is very low with the use of modern immunosuppressive protocols and the short-term results are impressive. LÄS MER
23. Icodextrin metabolism in peritoneal dialysis : clinical and experimental studies
Sammanfattning : Icodextrin is a glucose polymer which is used as osmotic agent to provide sustained ultrafiltration (UF) during the long (8-16 hours) dwell in end-stage renal disease patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD). The aims of this thesis were to study: the metabolism of icodextrin in the peritoneal cavity and in the circulation of PD patients and non-uremic rats, the role of alpha-amylase in its hydrolysis, and the rate of breakdown of a synthetic maltoheptaose (G7) ex vivo which we propose as a novel measure of amylase mediated oligosaccharide metabolism. 24. Chronic kidney disease : a clinical model of premature vascular aging
Sammanfattning : Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are prone to develop an accelerated vascular aging phenotype characterized by vascular calcification (VC), a major culprit of cardiovascular complications and premature death. While VC has been recognized as an active pathophysiologic process with involvement of specific mediators and effectors, the coexistence of traditional risk factors (i. LÄS MER
25. Studies on verotoxigenic Escherichia coli O157 in Swedish cattle : from sampling to disease spread modelling
Sammanfattning : Verotoxigenic Escherichia coli O157:H7 (VTEC O157) is an important zoonotic pathogen capable of causing infections in humans, sometimes with severe symptoms such as hemorrhagic colitis and hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). Cattle are considered to be the main reservoir of the bacterium. LÄS MER
