31. Novel risk markers in the chronic kidney disease patient : new insights into the wasting-inflammation axis
Sammanfattning : Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) have a risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality that is 20 ]30 fold higher than that of a similar person without CKD. While traditional (i.e Framingham) risk factors certainly contribute, they cannot by themselves explain this exacerbated mortality burden. LÄS MER
32. The role of melanocortin 1 receptor in kidney disease
Sammanfattning : Nephrotic syndrome is a term describing a group of poorly understood glomerular diseases that are responsible for a steadily increasing number of patients requiring active uremic care. Characteristic symptoms of nephrotic syndrome are proteinuria, hypoalbuminemia, hyperlipidemia and peripheral edema, and treatment of these symptoms, rather than their cause, is currently the only option available to the clinician. 33. Studies on bone and mineral disorders in CKD : determinants and survival implications
Sammanfattning : Disruptions in mineral metabolism occur already at an early stage of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and may eventually lead to a complex of CKD - mineral and bone disorders (CKD-MBD) characterized by alterations of the mass, turnover rate, mineralization and strength of bones, and high risk of vascular calcification, fractures and other complications resulting in worse survival. The aim of this thesis was to increase the understanding of some aspects of CKD-MBD with special emphasis on clinical and laboratory determinants and implications for clinical outcome. LÄS MER
34. Malnutrition in patients with chronic renal failure
Sammanfattning : Protein-energy malnutrition is common in patients with chronic renal failure (CRF) and may contribute to a poor clinical outcome. However, the role of nutrition in this regard has not been clearly defined. LÄS MER
35. Immunoglobulins, immunoglobulin subclass-distributions and serologic markers in some renal and systemic disorders
Sammanfattning : In this study we evaluated pathogenetic factors and possible mediators of renal and systemic disorders where immunologic mechanisms might be of importance. An abberant immunoglobulin and IgG-subclass distribution was detected in 103 patients with primary and secondary glomerulonephritis as well as in 38 patients with the systemic disease primary Sjögren 's syndrome or purpura hypergammaglobulinemica (elevated IgG1 and low IgG2 ).
