1. Rough starts and tough times : geographies of workers and firms in transition
Sammanfattning : Economic change can lead to multiple and sometimes conflicting outcomes for workers, employers, and regions. At the center of economic change are the dynamic interactions among diverse workers and firms in specific labor market contexts. LÄS MER
2. Rapid Urbanization : An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Urban Transition in Developing Countries
Sammanfattning : This thesis is concerned with the challenges posed by the contemporary urban narrative in developing countries. It is premised on the notion of the urban transition, which posits that as a country develops it undergoes a transformation from a predominantly rural society to a predominantly urban one. LÄS MER
3. Computer Simulations in Materials Physics: Time-scales and Accuracy
Sammanfattning : Computer simulations are expected to play an increasingly important role within materials physics in the future. Owing to a combination of accurate physical approximations, improved implementations of these approximations, and the exponentially increasing power of computers, problems can now be solved on length and time-scales which were unimaginable only a decade ago. 4. Physics of Strong Correlations in Electronic Structure and Model Calculations
Sammanfattning : Using field theoretical methods models of strongly correlated electrons have been investigated. Application to electronic structure calculations has been made. LÄS MER
5. District heating in future Europe : Modelling expansion potentials and mapping heat synergy regions
Sammanfattning : This thesis presents a set of methodologies and approaches to investigate and determine the extent by which district heating can contribute to improved energy system efficiency and reduced carbon dioxide emissions in future Europe. The main motivation for suggesting large-scale implementation of district heating as a structural energy efficiency measure to obtain these objectives originates essentially in the predicament that a majority of European buildings today remain highly dependent on fossil fuels to provide energy needed for space heating and hot water preparation.
