31. Labeling, tagging and charging - Long standing issues in bioenergetics addressed with novel techniques
Sammanfattning : Understanding the molecular details of bioenergetic processes is fundamentally important. Defects in the mitochondrial energy metabolism can lead to untimely apoptosis and thus cause serious degenerative human diseases. LÄS MER
32. Standing in children with bilateral spastic cerebral palsy : aspects of muscle strength, vision and motor function
Sammanfattning : The movement and posture disorder of cerebral palsy (CP) is presumed to mainly be a consequence of the motor disorder, but accompanying disturbances with sensations and perception have also been suggested to influence motor function. The aim was to investigate factors influencing standing posture in children with bilateral spastic CP (BSCP) with varying standing abilities. LÄS MER
33. Lignin- and PAN-based carbon fibres as negative electrodes for alkali-ion batteries
Sammanfattning : The development of sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) and potassium-ion batteries (KIBs) have accelerated since they can now reach similar gravimetric energy densities as lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) but with a lower environmental impact. Hard carbon is the most common negative electrode for SIBs and KIBs and can be made from renewable resources such as lignin. LÄS MER
34. Acoustic Forces in Cytometry and Biomedical Applications: Multidimensional Acoustophoresis
Sammanfattning : Over the last decades the ongoing work in the fields of Lab-on-a-Chip and Micro-Total-Analysis-Systems has led to the discovery of new or improved ways to handle and analyse small volumes of biofluids and complex biosuspensions. The benefits of working on the microscale include: miniaturization of the analysis systems with less need for large sample volumes; temporal and spatial control of suspended particle/cell positions; low volume sheath flow lamination or mixing; novel separation techniques by using forces inherent to the microscale domain; precise regulation of sample temperatures and rapid analysis with less volumes needed to be processed. 35. Micro-scale Platforms for Investigations of Biological Structures
Sammanfattning : This thesis describes the development of innovative micro-scale platforms as a means to address the current challenges within the field of cell biology, and to provide an interface between miniaturized analytical technology and experimental systems for the life sciences. The work includes an analytical platform for rapid assessment of the viability of adherent single cells; a surface patterning strategy for investigations of cell-to-cell communication via protrusions; a versatile microfluidic probe in SU-8 hard-polymer, and a microfabricated millimeter-wave measurement system for the identification and characterization of niosome (non-ionic surfactant vesicle) constituents, which is operated in a label-free, non-invasive manner.
