1. Traffic-related pollutants in urban snow : Concentrations, size fractionation, and release with snowmelt
Sammanfattning : In urban areas with seasonal snow, traffic-related pollutants such as solid particles, metals, chloride, organic pollutants, and microplastics (MPs) can be temporarily stored in snowbanks along roads and streets. When the snow melts, it releases the accumulated pollutants and the resulting snowmelt with diverse pollutants may partly infiltrate into the ground, or enter storm sewers and eventually be discharged into, and impact on, the receiving waters. 2. Size Characterisation of Water-Soluble Polymers Using Asymmetrical Flow Field-Flow Fractionation
Sammanfattning : Size, as expressed by molar mass, radius of gyration or hydrodynamic radius, for example, is a fundamental parameter of polymers in solution. Thus, there is a strong need for the characterisation of both the size and shape of polymers, particularly of those utilised in various industrial applications. LÄS MER
3. Purification Processes for Complex Biomacromolecules
Sammanfattning : This thesis details various techniques and considerations for the purification of complex biomacromolecules. Initially an α-mannosidase from babaco fruit was purified using anion exchange-, lectin affinity- and size exclusion chromatography. LÄS MER
4. Bacteria and geochemistry in a former uranium open pit mine - mobilization of trace metals
Sammanfattning : In mining areas around the world, chemical and biotic processes have lead to the release of toxic substances, e.g. metals. Microbial processes influence metal speciation, while the chemical environment shapes and controls microbial populations. LÄS MER
5. Self Assembly of Hardwood Xylan -In Aqueous Solution and at Cellulosic Surfaces
Sammanfattning : The climate change on our planet is an issue of great concern. The dignity of this issue was confirmed by the award of the international panel of climate change (IPCC) the Nobel peace prize. This problem arises from the way that we live our lives, how we produce energy, materials and chemicals from a fossil source. LÄS MER
