6. Semi-natural grasslands: landscape, history and plant species diversity
Sammanfattning : This thesis explores the impact of past and present landscape and habitat structure on present levels of vascular plant species diversity within fragmented semi-natural grasslands. Within the Jordtorp-area, a mosaic agricultural landscape on the island of Öland (Sweden), historical land-use changes and the development of semi-natural grasslands was characterized, over a time-period of almost 300 years, using historical maps, aerial photographs and a high-resolution imagery. 7. Remote sensing of grassland communities : integrated effects of soil nutrients and habitat age
Sammanfattning : Semi-natural grasslands are characterized by high fine-scale plant species richness. The richest grassland communities, with many habitat-specialist species, are found in ancient grassland sites that have a long continuity of grazing management and low levels of soil nutrients. Grazed grasslands were widespread in the historical landscape. LÄS MER
8. Plant community assembly in grazed grasslands
Sammanfattning : Species assembly into local communities from the surrounding region can be caused either by species failure to reach the site (i.e. seed limitation) or to establish (i.e. LÄS MER
9. Recruitment and distribution patterns of plants in Swedish semi-natural grasslands
Sammanfattning : Semi-natural pastures with different histories of management are nowadays the main remnants of the traditional agrarian landscape in southern Sweden. The aims of this thesis were to investigate the importance of features of the present-day landscape and its management history for species distribution and abundance patterns in Swedish semi-natural pastures, with a particular focus on factors affecting recruitment processes. 10. Effects of Past and Current Land Use on Biodiversity: from a semi-natural grassland on Öland (Sweden) to a European perspective
Sammanfattning : Concerns are increasing about the loss of biodiversity under land use change and how this will affect the ecosystem services provided by natural and semi-natural communities and consequently how this will threaten human well-being. The thesis examines the impact of present and past land use on different aspects of biodiversity; namely species diversity, traits and functional diversity and on ecosystem services. LÄS MER
