11. The Membrane-Spanning Domain of Complex I Investigated with Fusion Protein Techniques
Sammanfattning : NADH:quinone oxidoreductase, or complex I, is a large, complex and poorly understood bioenergetic enzyme in the respiratory chain of living organisms. The enzyme has a conserved core structure, comprising fourteen protein subunits: Seven subunits protrude from the membrane and contain a flavin prosthetic group and eight iron-sulfur clusters that guide electrons from the oxidation of NADH towards the quinone binding site(s). Sammanfattning : Starting from the experiences of hackers developing free software and open hardware, this thesis addresses some key and recurrent themes in the field of Science and Technology Studies (STS). It poses the question: how are technologies conceptualised, constructed and used in ways that render some aspects of them transparent, while leaving others opaque? Sammanfattning : A metal nanoparticle can be considered as consisting of a base of positive ion cores and a sea of free electrons. When the free electrons are displaced, for example, by an incident electric field, a restoring force acts on the electrons.
