1. Evaluating and optimizing surveillance and response strategies for malaria elimination in the Asia Pacific region
Sammanfattning : Malaria case investigation and reactive case detection (RACD) activities are widely implemented in low transmission settings to identify additional malaria infections and gather surveillance information, but with varying degrees of success. Challenges in conducting RACD include poor diagnostic sensitivity (particularly for low density and asymptomatic infections), knowledge gaps among those conducting RACD, financial and resource constraints, and operational and logistical difficulties. 2. A Fully Integrated Microneedle-based Transdermal Drug Delivery System
Sammanfattning : Patch-based transdermal drug delivery offers a convenient way to administer drugs without the drawbacks of standard hypodermic injections relating to issues such as patient acceptability and injection safety. However, conventional transdermal drug delivery is limited to therapeutics where the drug can diffuse across the skin barrier. LÄS MER
3. Approaches to soft drug analogues of dihydrofolate reductase inhibitors : Design and synthesis
Sammanfattning : The main objective of the research described in this thesis has been the design and synthesis of inhibitors of the enzyme dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) intended for local administration and devoid of systemic side-effects. The blocking of the enzymatic activity of DHFR is a key element in the treatment of many diseases, including cancer, bacterial and protozoal infections, and also opportunistic infections associated with AIDS (Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, PCP). 4. Common mechanism for teratogenicity of antiepileptic drugs : Drug-induced embryonic arrhythmia and hypoxia-reoxygenation damage
Sammanfattning : The Antiepilptic drugs (AEDs) phenytoin (PHT), carbamazepine (CBZ), phenobarbital (PB), tri- and dimethadione (TMD and DMD) are known teratogens having a common malformation pattern in human and animal studies. This thesis was designed chiefly to test a hypothesis correlating the teratogenicity of these AEDs to episodes of pharmacologically induced embryonic arrhythmia and hypoxia-reoxygenation damage. 5. Bioactive nanocellulose materials for the treatment of chronic wounds
Sammanfattning : Chronic wounds represent a burden for the healthcare system and significantly affect the quality of life of the patients. There is currently a lack of efficient treatments but new, improved therapeutic approaches are under development. LÄS MER
