6. Hidden patterns that matter : statistical methods for analysis of DNA and RNA data
Sammanfattning : Understanding how the genetic variations can affect characteristics and function of organisms can help researchers and medical doctors to detect genetic alterations that cause disease and reveal genes that causes antibiotic resistance. The opportunities and progress associated with such data come however with challenges related to statistical analysis. LÄS MER
7. Classification of Remotely Sensed Data Utilising the Autocorrelation between Spatio-Temporal Neighbours
Sammanfattning : The subject of this thesis is methods for classifying land using satellite images, and adherent parameter estimation. A satellite image consists of a set of pixels where measurements of spectral intensities are observed. Based on these spectral intensities, each pixel is assigned a class. LÄS MER
8. Some Contributions to Description and Validation of the Extreme Value Distribution
Sammanfattning : This thesis focuses on the validation and description of the Gumbel distribution. Since this is a scale and location parameter distribution, the generalized least squares regression of the order statistics on the expected values can be used, without the necessity of iteration, to obtain the best linear unbiased estimates of the parameters. 9. Low-level analysis of microarray data
Sammanfattning : This thesis consists of an extensive introduction followed by seven papers (A-F) on low-level analysis of microarray data. Focus is on calibration and normalization of observed data. The introduction gives a brief background of the microarray technology and its applications in order for anyone not familiar with the field to read the thesis. LÄS MER
10. Stochastic claims reserving in non-life insurance : Bootstrap and smoothing models
Sammanfattning : In practice there is a long tradition of actuaries calculating reserve estimates according to deterministic methods without explicit reference to a stochastic model. For instance, the chain-ladder was originally a deterministic reserving method. LÄS MER
