16. Quantitative methods for diffusion measurements in fluorescence microscopy
Sammanfattning : In this work, statistical methods are developed for mapping mass transport locally based on images collected using a confocal laser scanning microscope. Besides presenting raster image correlation spectroscopy as an established method in fluorescence microscopy, we introduce a single particle tracking method which takes advantage of the raster scanning of the image in a confocal microscope. 17. Chitosan and chitosan/wheat gluten blends : properties of extrudates, solid films and bio-foams
Sammanfattning : This thesis presents four different studis describing the characteristics and processing opportunities of two widely available biopolymers: chitosan and wheat gluten. The interest in these materials is mainly because they are bio-based and obtained as co- or by-products in the fuel and food sectorIn the first study, high solids content chitosan samples (60 wt. 18. Lean, Green, and Agile Design and Control of Pallet Systems
Sammanfattning : Pallet based automated material handling systems are main devices to transport and locate various part types in flexible production plants. To fulfill production objectives and win in the competitive environment of mass customization, proper deign and control of handling and locating pallet systems have been highly concerned. 19. Phenotypic plasticity and the evolution of an inducible morphological defence in crucian carp
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, I have investigated factors (cues, benefits, and costs) affecting the evolution of an inducible morphological defence in crucian carp (Carassius carassius). Inducible defences are favoured over permanent defences when prey have reliable cues to detect predators, when defences are effective but costly, and when predation pressure is variable and unpredictable, but sometimes strong. 20. Halomonas species as a source of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate). Preparation of hydrophilic macroporous polymer scaffolds
Sammanfattning : This thesis presents studies on moderately halophilic bacteria belonging to the family Halomonadaceae that accumulate polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) in high amounts when grown under conditions of nitrogen limitation. PHB is the simplest homopolymer belonging to the class of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), the biopolyesters that can biodegraded in the environment to carbon dioxide and water and are hence attractive substitutes for fossil-derived plastics.
