  1. 11. Molecular mechanisms of insulin action in human skeletal muscle and adipose tissue : implications for diabetes and obesity

    Författare :Marie Björnholm; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Glucose transport; insulin signal transduction; skeletal muscle; adipose tissue; type 2 diabetes mellitus; obesity; very low calorie diet.;

    Sammanfattning : Studies of animal models of type 2 diabetes mellitus implicate that impaired insulin signal transduction to glucose transport accounts for whole body insulin resistance in skeletal muscle and adipose tissue. The overall aim of the present thesis was to determine insulin signal transduction to glucose transport in human skeletal muscle and adipose tissue from type 2 diabetic patients and obese insulin resistant subjects. 2. 12. Impact of candidate genes on obesity and type 2 diabetes

    Författare :Ewa-Carin Långberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D) have strong genetic components. Identification of susceptibility genes in both diseases will give better knowledge of their pathomechanisms and future therapies. LÄS MER

  3. 13. Aspects of Plasminiogen Activator Inhibitor 1 in Metabolic Syndrome

    Författare :Karin Mossberg; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; PAI-1; metabolic syndrome; obesity; type 2 diabetes; cardiovascular disease; fibrinolysis; thrombi; plasma; platelets; adipose tissue; mRNA; qPCR; reference gene;

    Sammanfattning : Plasminogen activator inhibitor 1 (PAI-1) is the main inhibitor of the fibrinolytic system and binds irreversibly to tissue-type plasminogen activator (t-PA), and thereby inhibits the protective action of t-PA against thrombus formation. Elevated levels of plasma PAI-1 is observed in subjects with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and the metabolic syndrome (MetS), which is a combination of metabolic features including obesity. LÄS MER

  4. 14. Characterization of ß3-adrenoceptor function in human fat cells

    Författare :Johan Hoffstedt; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :adipocyte; ß3-adrenoceptors; FFA; lipolysis; noradrenaline; polymorphism;

    Sammanfattning : Human white adipocytes have, besides ß1- and ß2-adrenoceptors, also been found to express a third ß-adrenergic receptor, termed the ß3-adrenoceptor. The functional role and clinical implications of the ß3-adrenoceptor is however poorly elucidated. LÄS MER

  5. 15. Molecular mechanisms of weight regulation in obesity and chronic renal failure with special reference to leptin and uncoupling protein 2

    Författare :Louise Nordfors; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :adipose tissue; BMI; chronic renal failure CRF ; gene expression; in situ hybridization; leptin; obesity; peritoneal dialysis PD ; single nucleotide polymorphism SNP ; UCP2; UCP2-polymorphism;

    Sammanfattning : Obesity, which increases the risk of developing serious medical disorders, such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes, is threatening to become a global epidemic, meaning escalating healthcare costs for society and reduced quality of life for the individual. Thus, there is a large unmet need for improved preventive strategies and effective treatments. LÄS MER
