6. Characteristics and functions of thymic exosomes in human and mouse
Sammanfattning : Thymocytes develop in the thymus to become a functional pool of T-cells in the periphery. To achieve this, the thymocytes go through several steps of maturation and selection within the thymus. LÄS MER
7. Curing Multiple Sclerosis : How to do it and how to prove it
Sammanfattning : Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a potentially curative treatment for multiple sclerosis (MS) with now more than 600 documented cases in the medical literature. Long-term remission can be achieved with this therapy, but when is it justified to claim that a patient is cured from MS? In attempt to answer this question, the outcome of the Swedish patients is described, mechanisms behind the therapeutic effect are discussed and new tools for demonstration of absence of disease have been developed. 8. Reduced ROS production triggers arthritis / The role of T cells in arthritis pathogenesis
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis is to defend a novel mechanism that triggers arthritis susceptibility in both rats and mice through reduced production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), but also to introduce a novel model for chronic relapsing arthritis. Five papers are included, all of which employ animal models for rheumatoid arthritis and one that also uses animal models for multiple sclerosis. LÄS MER
9. Suppressive DNA vaccination in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis
Sammanfattning : This thesis describes the development of a novel method to suppress an organ-specific autoimmune disease, experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), by vaccination with DNA encoding autoantigenic peptides. DNA vaccination can produce long-term immunity and generate antigen-specific CD8+ and CD4+ T cells. LÄS MER
10. Immunogenetics and treatment of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis
Sammanfattning : Experimental autoimmune encephalomyelities (EAE) is a model of multiple sclerosis (MS). This experimental central nervous system (CNS) disease can be induced in rats by immunization with components of the CNS myelin sheath. LÄS MER
