11. Interaction between chemicals and melanin : Role in the aetiology, diagnosis and treatment of melanoma
Sammanfattning : The incidence of malignant melanoma has continually increased over the past decades and the prognosisis poor after dissemination of metastases. A conspicuous feature of melanocytes and melanoma cells is the production of melanin. LÄS MER
12. Dissecting Phenotypic Variation in Pigmentation using Forward and Reverse Genetics
Sammanfattning : Coat color and patterning phenotypes have been extensively studied as a model for advancing our understanding of the relationship between genetic and phenotypic variation. In this thesis, genes of relevance for pigment cell biology were investigated. The dissertation is divided in two parts. LÄS MER
13. Interaction between the nervous and immune systems in allergic contact dermatitis : a clinical and experimental study with emphasis on the role of VIP and serotonin
Sammanfattning : The interaction between the nervous and immune systems was investigated in allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) with emphasis on the role of vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) and serotonin (S-HT). Dual dose-dependent effects of VIP on the migration of mononuclear and polymorphonuclear leukocytes were found. LÄS MER
14. Studies of transforming growth factor alpha in normal and abnormal growth
Sammanfattning : Regulation of growth is of fundamental importance for development of the organism and to maintain health. The induction of cell proliferation and matrix production are influenced by several different signaling systems, most importantly by growth factors. LÄS MER
15. Assessment of prognostic markers in benign and malignant melanocytic tumours
Sammanfattning : Cutaneous melanoma is a malignant tumour that arises from pigmented skin cells – melanocytes, represents the most rapidly increasing cancer worldwide which is causing significant public health problem. During the past decade a significant progress has been made in the understanding of genesis and progression of melanocytic lesions. LÄS MER
