  1. 11. In Search of the State : An Ethnography of Public Service Provision in Urban Niger

    Författare :Gabriella Körling; Sten Hagberg; Christian Lund; Mathieu Hilgers; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; anthropology; the state; public services; healthcare; education; development; Niamey; Niger; Cultural anthropology; Kulturantropologi; Kulturantropologi; Cultural Anthropology;

    Sammanfattning : This study explores public health and education provision in Niamey, the capital of Niger, by merging the ethnographic study of public services with an anthropological analysis of the state and of local politics. Based on anthropological fieldwork carried out in a group of neighbourhoods in the periphery of Niamey, the study highlights the political dimensions of public service provision in a local arena where international development interventions and national plans meet local realities and where a wide range of actors and institutions, dis-courses, meanings, and practices are mobilized in the offering of and the regulation of access to public services. 2. 12. Geographic Labour Mobility - Causes and Consequences

    Författare :Anders Boman; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; geographic mobility; internal migration; job displacement; ethnic enclaves; unemployment; job search; search scope; earnings effects; gender differences; immigrants; selection;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis consists of three self-contained chapters. The first chapter studies the causes of internal migration, the second studies the earnings effects of internal migration, and the third analyses what could be perceived as an effect of mobility but is in fact not. LÄS MER

  3. 13. Discourse in Statistical Machine Translation

    Författare :Christian Hardmeier; Joakim Nivre; Jörg Tiedemann; Marcello Federico; Lluís Màrquez; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Statistical machine translation; Discourse-level machine translation; Document decoding; Local search; Pronominal anaphora; Pronoun translation; Neural networks; Computational Linguistics; Datorlingvistik;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis addresses the technical and linguistic aspects of discourse-level processing in phrase-based statistical machine translation (SMT). Connected texts can have complex text-level linguistic dependencies across sentences that must be preserved in translation. However, the models and algorithms of SMT are pervaded by locality assumptions. LÄS MER

  4. 14. Combinatorial Optimization for Infinite Games on Graphs

    Författare :Henrik Björklund; Sergei Vorobyov; Erich Grädel; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; infinite games; combinatorial optimization; randomized algorithms; model checking; strategy evaluation functions; linear programming; iterative improvement; local search; Computer science; Datavetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : Games on graphs have become an indispensable tool in modern computer science. They provide powerful and expressive models for numerous phenomena and are extensively used in computer- aided verification, automata theory, logic, complexity theory, computational biology, etc. LÄS MER

  5. 15. The importance of search behavior and movements for spatial distributions of herbivorous insects

    Författare :Petter Andersson; Peter Hambäck; Johan Ehrlén; Tomas Roslin; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Olfactory search; Habitat heterogeneity; Species-traits; Immigration; Scaling relationships; Patch size; Plant-insect interactions; EAG; Odors; Pheromones; Plant Ecology; växtekologi;

    Sammanfattning : Insect populations commonly show large spatial variation in density, and much variation have been shown to be explained by the search behavior applied by the insect when locating habitat patches. This thesis explores the importance of odor-mediated attraction for immigration rates of herbivorous insects in relation to the size of the patches and the density of host plants within the patches.
