6. Structural and neurohormonal factors in left ventricular hypertrophy and inhibition of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system
Sammanfattning : Hypertensive left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is a major risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The aim of this thesis was to study how different neurohormonal systems relate to left ventricular mass, and to study structural and functional cardiovascular changes in hypertensive LVH. LÄS MER
7. The endocrine heart - metabolic actions of atrial natriuretic peptide
Sammanfattning : Abstract The natriuretic peptides (NPs), namely atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) and bran natriuretic peptide (BNP), which are secreted from cardiomyocytes in response to cardiac wall stress, play a significant role in the regulation of blood pressure, intravascular volume, and cardiac remodeling. Recently, NPs emerged as hormones with metabolic actions such as inhibition of the renin-angiotensin system and inhibition of inflammation, together with lipolysis and adipose tissue browning. 8. The role of fibroblast growth factor-23 in chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorder
Sammanfattning : Fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF23) was initially identified as the causative factor of autosomal dominant hypophosphatemic rickets. Further studies confirmed that FGF23 is predominantly expressed in the osteocytes and osteoblasts of bone and that circulating FGF23 acts on the kidney to inhibit renal phosphate reabsorption and 1,25(OH)2D3 hydroxylation. 9. Coarctation of the aorta : register and imaging studies
Sammanfattning : Background Coarctation of the aorta (CoA) constitutes 5-8 % of all congenital heart disease (CHD) and is associated with long-term complications such as hypertension (HTN) and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH). Factors associated with HTN, LVH, and diffuse myocardial fibrosis, are not yet fully explored in this population. LÄS MER
10. Common risk factors associated with acute myocardial infarction: Population-based studies with a focus on gender differences
Sammanfattning : The overall aim of this thesis was to explore how the risk for AMI, and the associations between several of its risk factors, differs by gender. Information was collected from four Swedish cohorts: one patient cohort from Skara (1992-1993, n=1149) and three population-based cohorts, i.e. LÄS MER
