1. Common risk factors associated with acute myocardial infarction: Population-based studies with a focus on gender differences
Sammanfattning : The overall aim of this thesis was to explore how the risk for AMI, and the associations between several of its risk factors, differs by gender. Information was collected from four Swedish cohorts: one patient cohort from Skara (1992-1993, n=1149) and three population-based cohorts, i.e. LÄS MER
2. PROTEIN VACCINE AGAINST NEONATAL GROUP B STREPTOCOCCAL INFECTION Immunization experiments in animals and a serological study in humans
Sammanfattning : Infection with group B streptococcus (GBS), an encapsulated bacterium, is an important cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality. Capsular polysaccharides and cell surface proteins of GBS are candidate antigens for development of a human GBS vaccine. Proteins have many advantages as vaccine antigens. LÄS MER
3. Child nutrition in rural Nicaragua : Population-based studies in a transitional society
Sammanfattning : Emerging favourable as well as unfavourable nutrition patterns are observed in societies undergoing rapid social and economic change. The aim of this thesis is to analyse the associations between household and maternal resources and infant and young child feeding habits and nutritional status in rural Nicaragua, a low-income transitional society. 4. Biosensing and Protein Array Design using Lipid Assemblies
Sammanfattning : Biomolecular sensing often includes immobilization of biomolecules, e.g. DNA, antibodies etc., to solid supports, where they act as selective recognition elements. LÄS MER
5. Study of Catalyst Deactivation in Three Different Industrial Processes
Sammanfattning : Deactivation of catalysts were investigated focusing on three industrial processes: 1) Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) for abatement of NOx from biomass combustion using V2O5-WO3 /TiO2 catalysts; 2) Catalytic oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOC) from printing industries using a Pt/γ-Al2O3 catalyst; and 3) Ni and Pt/Rh catalysts used in steam reforming reaction of bio-syngas obtained from biomass gasification. The aim has been to simulate industrial conditions in laboratory experiments in order to comprehend influence of compounds affecting catalysts performance.
