1. Biomarkers of vascular function and structure in young healthy adults
Sammanfattning : Atherosclerosis is a disease affecting the blood vessels in the body. Its pathophysiologic mechanisms involve infiltration of the vessel walls by fatty matter and immune cells. This process is slow, starting in childhood but typically not manifesting as symptomatic disease until late adulthood (after 60 years of age). LÄS MER
2. Myofibroblasts and the Vascular Endothelium : Impact of Fibrin Degradation Products and miRNA on Vascular Motility and Function
Sammanfattning : Angiogenesis is the formation of new blood vessels from pre-existing vasculature and is important during development as well as wound healing and tissue remodeling. Angiogenesis also occurs during pathological conditions such as diabetic retinopathy and cancer. LÄS MER
3. Angiotensin II and vascular disease. Studies in rats and atherosclerosis-prone mice
Sammanfattning : Angiotensin II (Ang II) is of importance for a number of physiological processes but also plays an important pathophysiological role in cardiovascular disease. The aim of this thesis was to evaluate the role of Ang II in hypertension-related atherosclerosis and vascular disease and to investigate possible anti-atherosclerotic effects of the angiotensin II, type 2 (AT2) receptor. 4. Cardiovascular risk factors and peripheral vascular function in lung transplant recipients
Sammanfattning : Objective: Cardiovascular disease is a major contributor to morbidity and mortality after organ transplantation. Development of cardiovascular risk factors, like hypertension, is common after transplantation. LÄS MER
5. Sleep disordered breathing and hemodynamic function
Sammanfattning : This thesis addresses the association between sleep disordered breathing (SDB) and hemodynamic function. A cross sectional study in a sleep laboratory cohort (n=1190) demonstrated a dose-response relationship between the severity of SDB, expressed as respiratory disturbance index (RDI), and office blood pressure, heart rate, and the risk of hypertension.
