1. The role of fibroblast growth factor-23 in chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorder
Sammanfattning : Fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF23) was initially identified as the causative factor of autosomal dominant hypophosphatemic rickets. Further studies confirmed that FGF23 is predominantly expressed in the osteocytes and osteoblasts of bone and that circulating FGF23 acts on the kidney to inhibit renal phosphate reabsorption and 1,25(OH)2D3 hydroxylation. 2. Advanced electrocardiography in myocardial electrical remodeling : insights from cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging
Sammanfattning : The electrocardiogram (ECG) is a common diagnostic tool in cardiology thanks to its high accessibility and low cost. However, in several cardiovascular diagnoses, including left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), current conventional ECG measures and criteria have a poor diagnostic performance. LÄS MER
3. Left ventricular hypertrophy and the insulin resistance syndrome
Sammanfattning : Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and the insulin resistance syndrome are common conditions associated with a markedly increased cardiovascular risk. In a fairly large prospective longitudinal study of men from the general population, we found that an unfavorable serum fatty acid profile and components of the insulin resistance syndrome such as dyslipidemia, obesity and hypertension at age 50 predicted the prevalence of LVH at age 70. 4. Structural and neurohormonal factors in left ventricular hypertrophy and inhibition of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system
Sammanfattning : Hypertensive left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is a major risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The aim of this thesis was to study how different neurohormonal systems relate to left ventricular mass, and to study structural and functional cardiovascular changes in hypertensive LVH. LÄS MER
5. Influences from physical activity and gender on the metabolic syndrome and left ventricular hypertrophy : cross-sectional and longitudinal studies
Sammanfattning : Aims: The overall aim was to investigate influences from physical activity (PA) and gender on the metabolic syndrome (MetS) and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH). Specific aims: Study 1: To examine the prevalence of the MetS and its association to PA and other lifestyle factors. LÄS MER
