  1. 1. Lead(II) as a Tool for Probing RNA Structure in vivo

    Författare :Magnus Lindell; Gerhart Wagner; Roland Hartmann; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Molecular biology; lead II cleavage; RNA structure; in vivo probing; Molekylärbiologi; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Chemical modification and limited enzymatic hydrolysis are powerful methods to obtain detailed information on the structure and dynamics of RNAs in solution. In the work presented here I have taken advantage of the properties of the divalent metal ion lead(II) to establish it as a new probe for investigating the structure of RNA in vivo. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Development of chemical biology tools for metabolomics analysis : Phase II modifications as a link between host and microbiota co-metabolism

    Författare :Mario S. P. Correia; Daniel Globisch; Warwick Dunn; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Metabolomics; Chemical biology; sulfatase; Glucuronides; Phase II modifications; Microbiome; co-metabolism; method development; Kemi med inriktning mot analytisk kemi; Chemistry with specialization in Analytical Chemistry;

    Sammanfattning : Biomarker discovery is an extremely important field for early disease detection. New selective molecular markers are in high demand, as an earlier disease detection can lead to improved patient care. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Targeting bacterial infections by using immunomodulatory host defence peptides and proteins

    Författare :Martina Kalle; Lund Dermatologi och venereologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Host dfence peptides; Sepsis; Immunomodulation; Heparin cofactor II;

    Sammanfattning : Bacterial infections and sepsis are amongst the leading causes of death worldwide. Sepsis is caused by an uncontrolled systemic host response towards an invading pathogen. Due to the engagement of various systems including cellmediated responses, the coagulation and complement cascades, treatment of sepsis remains challenging. LÄS MER

  4. 4. On the mechanism and consequences of light-induced D₁ protein degradation in higher plants

    Författare :Ivar Virgin; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; biokemi; Biochemistry;

    Sammanfattning : The basic source of energy for the whole biosphere is sunlight which is converted tochemical energy by the process of photosynthesis in a wide variety of organisms rangingfrom prokaryotic bacteria to eukaryotic higher plants. It is therefore surprising thatphotosynthetic activity can be reduced when plants are exposed to excessive light,especially under adverse environmental conditions. LÄS MER

  5. 5. HOST DEFENSE PEPTIDES OF THE COAGULATION SYSTEM AND THEIR THERAPEUTIC POTENTIAL

    Författare :Gopinath Kasetty; Lund Dermatologi och venereologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Host defense peptides; Sepsis; Serine proteases; Factor X; Immunomodulation;

    Sammanfattning : Prevention and control of infectious diseases is seriously hampered by an increasing prevalence of bacteria that are resistant towards conventional antibiotics. Resistant bacteria are often the root cause of infections that trigger the complex clinical syndrome called sepsis, which is a concern for high morbidity and mortality. LÄS MER
