  1. 16. Why so different? - Aspects of voice characteristics in operatic and musical theatre singing : Aspects of voice characteristics in operatic and musical theatre singing

    Författare :Eva Björkner; Anders Askenfelt; Ronald C. Scherer; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; operatic singing; musical theatre singing; voice source; subglottal pressure; flow glottogram; inverse filtering; formant frequencies; amplitude quotient AQ ; Music; Musikvetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis addresses aspects of voice characteristics in operatic and musical theatre singing. The common aim of the studies was to identify respiratory, phonatory and resonatory characteristics accounting for salient voice timbre differences between singing styles. LÄS MER

  2. 17. Robots Beyond Borders : The Role of Social Robots in Spoken Second Language Practice

    Författare :Ronald Cumbal; Olov Engwall; Tony Belpaeme; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Conversations; gaze; backchannels; multi-party; accent; culture; Samtal; blick; återkoppling; gruppdynamik; brytning; kultur; Speech and Music Communication; Tal- och musikkommunikation;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis investigates how social robots can support adult second language (L2) learners in improving conversational skills. It recognizes the challenges inherent in adult L2 learning, including increased cognitive demands and the unique motivations driving adult education. LÄS MER

  3. 18. Computational Modeling of the Vocal Tract : Applications to Speech Production

    Författare :Saeed Dabbaghchian; Olov Engwall; Sidney Fels; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; vocal tract; upper airway; speech production; biomechanical model; acoustic model; vocal tract reconstruction; Tal- och musikkommunikation; Speech and Music Communication;

    Sammanfattning : Human speech production is a complex process, involving neuromuscular control signals, the effects of articulators' biomechanical properties and acoustic wave propagation in a vocal tract tube of intricate shape. Modeling these phenomena may play an important role in advancing our understanding of the involved mechanisms, and may also have future medical applications, e. LÄS MER

  4. 19. On the beat : human movement and timing in the production and perception of music

    Författare :Sofia Dahl; Anders Askenfelt; David Huron; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Music; Musikvetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis addresses three aspects of movement, performance and perception in music performance. First, the playing of an accent, a simple but much used and practiced element in drumming is studied, second, the perception of gradually changing tempo, and third, the perception and communication of specific emotional intentions through movements during music performance. 5. 20. On the control of virtual violins : Physical modelling and control of bowed string instruments

    Författare :Matthias Demoucron; Anders Askenfelt; Rene Causse; Benoit Fabre; Marcelo Wanderley; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Bowed string; physical modelling; sound synthesis; performance control; violin playing; Corde frottée; modélisation physique; synthèse sonore; contrôle gestuel; violon; Struken sträng; fysikalisk modellering; ljudsyntes; musikutförande; violinspel; Other physics; Övrig fysik; Computer science; Datavetenskap; Acoustics; Akustik;

    Sammanfattning :   This thesis treats the control of sound synthesis of bowed string instruments based on physical modelling. The work followed two approaches: (a) a systematic exploration of the influence of control parameters (bow force, bow velocity, and bow-bridge distance) on the output of a physical model of the violin, and (b) measurements and analyses of the bowing parameters in real violin playing in order to model and parameterize basic classes of bowing patterns for synthesis control.
