16. Estimation of Forest Biomass and Faraday Rotation using Ultra High Frequency Synthetic Aperture Radar
Sammanfattning : Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data in the Ultra High Frequency (UHF; 300 MHz – 3 GHz)) band have been shown to be strongly dependent of forest biomass, which is a poorly estimated variable in the global carbon cycle. In this thesis UHF-band SAR data from the fairly flat hemiboreal test site Remningstorp in southern Sweden were analysed. LÄS MER
17. Ectomycorrhizal Fungal Mycelial Dynamics and its Role in Forest Soil Carbon Cycling
Sammanfattning : Most boreal tree species rely on root-associated ectomycorrhizal fungi for nutrient acquisition, in exchange the trees allocate part of their photosynthetically fixed carbon (C) to these fungi. This has a feedback on soil C dynamics as mycorrhizal fungi are important in regulating soil C cycling and storage. LÄS MER
18. Effects of site preparation and stump harvest on carbon dynamics in forest soils
Sammanfattning : Efforts are being made to substitute fossil fuels with renewable alternatives to address increasing concerns regarding global climate change driven by anthropogenic emissions of CO2 and other greenhouse gases. Stumps of harvested trees could make a significant contribution to these efforts in Scandinavia. LÄS MER
19. Fossil Free or Not - That is the Question
Sammanfattning : This is an evaluation of Jämtland County’s ability to achieve its climate targets to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions with 10% annually, and to become fossil fuel free 2030. There is a risk that the target to become fossil fuel-free, relying primarily on outtake of forest biomass, contradicts with the target in the UN Paris Agreement to keep the global temperature increase below 1. 20. On the role of terrestrial ecosystems in a changing Arctic
Sammanfattning : The global temperature rise is proportional to the cumulative amount of CO2 emissions to the atmosphere. This observation is consistent between climate models and historical observations. LÄS MER
