11. Psychiatric disorders in Swedish elite athletes : Prevalence, comorbidity and life stories
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis is to explore psychiatric disorders in Swedish elite athletes.The first study investigates a) the prevalence of symptoms of psychiatric disorders, b) the prevalence of mental health problems, defined by psychological suffering and impairment>2 weeks, c) the usefulness of sport-specific instruments in indicating clinical levels of psychiatric symptoms, and d) the life history of psychiatric disorders. Sammanfattning : Running as a form of physical activity continues to grow in popularity and is accompanied by a number of health benefits, but one of the greatest threats that challenge these benefits is running-related injuries. The overall aim of this thesis is to identify the proportion of runners who sustain a running-related injury (incidence), possible reasons as to why they sustain these injuries (risk factors) and, finally, whether general injury-prevention guidelines can be effective in reducing the number of running-related injuries in recreational runners. 15. Endocrine profile in female Olympic athletes : of importance for physical performance and impact on anti-doping testing
Sammanfattning : Endogenous androgens and insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) are anabolic hormones that may contribute to increased muscle mass and possibly enhanced athletic performance. Furthermore, the second to fourth digit ratio (2D:4D ratio), suggested as an indirect measurement of prenatal androgen exposure, has been related to athletic ability. LÄS MER
