  1. 1. Role of Neuropeptides and Neurotrophic Factors in Seizure Modulation

    Författare :Avtandil Nanobashvili; Lund Neurologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; brain slice; entorhinal cortex; hippocampus; galanin; glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor; neuropeptide Y; epilepsy; kindling; Neurology; neurofysiologi; neuropsykologi; Neurologi;

    Sammanfattning : The presented thesis explores role of glial cell line derived neurotrophic factor family receptor a2 (GFRa2), as well as neuropeptide Y (NPY) and galanin and their receptors in modulation of seizure activity. We demonstrate that mice lacking the GFRa2 gene (GFRa2-/-) exhibit suppressed seizure generalization in traditional and rapid kindling models. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Beyond AMPA and NMDA: Slow synaptic mGlu/TRPC currents : Implications for dendritic integration

    Författare :Marcus Petersson; Erik Fransén; Abdel El Manira; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; transient receptor potential; TRP; metabotropic glutamate receptor; mGlu1 5; dendritic integration; synaptic activation; temporal summation; low-frequency; entorhinal cortex; mathematical model; computational neuroscience; Computer science; Datavetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : In order to understand how the brain functions, under normal as well as pathological conditions, it is important to study the mechanisms underlying information integration. Depending on the nature of an input arriving at a synapse, different strategies may be used by the neuron to integrate and respond to the input. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Cyclic nucleotide signalling in Alzheimer's disease postmortem brain

    Författare :Willy Lokwa Bonkale; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of this study was to determine the nature and significance of altered guanylyl cyclase (GC) and adenylyl cyclase (AC) signalling in Alzheimer's disease (AD) postmortem brain. Paper I describes a study of particulate and soluble GC activities in postmortem temporal cortex from a series of AD and matched control subjects. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Muscarinic M1 and M4 receptor subtypes in normal and pathological conditions in the central nervous system : studies on human and animal tissues using subtype selective ligands

    Författare :Ezra Mulugeta; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Snake venoms from different mamba species contain toxins that bind to muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (mAChR). The toxins MT-1 (selective for M1 after iodination), M1 toxin-1 (also known as MT7, selective for MI) and M4 toxin-1 (also known as MT3, selective for M4 receptors) were isolated and used to study M1 and M4 receptor subtypes in normal and pathological conditions. 5. 5. On the neuropeptide mRNA expression following neuropsychopharmacological treatments

    Författare :Olof Zachrisson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Cholecystokinin; Excitotoxicity; Electroconvulsive; In situ hybridisation; Kainic acid; Lithium; Manic-depressive illness; Neuropeptide Y; Rat brain; Schizophrenia; Seizure; Somatostatin; Substance P; Tachykinin receptor;

    Sammanfattning : In addition to classical neurotransmitters, an increasing number of neuropeptides have been found in the brain. Although neuropeptides may play important roles especially in higher brain functions such as emotion, mood, memory, and learning, most focus has been directed upon classical neurotransmitters and their receptors.
