  1. 1. Transboundary Law for Social-Ecological Resilience? : A Study on Eutrophication in the Baltic Sea Area

    Författare :Brita Bohman; Jonas Ebbesson; Lena Gipperth; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; transboundary pollution control; transboundary law; eutrophication; social-ecological resilience; ecosystem approach; environmental law; environmental governance; the Baltic Sea; ocean governance; miljörätt; Environmental Law;

    Sammanfattning : This dissertation evaluates the role and effectiveness of law in the transboundary environmental governance of the Baltic Sea with regard to eutrophication. To this end, it reviews the applicable international agreements with their related instruments, as well as the EU legal frameworks, for the protection of the Baltic Sea environment on the basis of theories on resilience in social-ecological systems. 2. 2. Ecological systems in space: From islands to contiguous landscapes

    Författare :Ankit Vikrant; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ecosystem stability; metacommunity; Metapopulation; community assembly; species area relationships; complex ecological systems;

    Sammanfattning : Dispersal and interaction networks underlie many ecological systems, often dictating spatio-temporal dynamics as well as emergent patterns. Dispersal has implications for establishment for distinct subpopulations of individual species as well as for the emergence of universal spatial patterns and varied community level structures. 3. 3. In situ remediation of contaminated sediments using thin-layer capping : efficiency in contaminant retention and ecological implications

    Författare :Göran S. Samuelsson; Jonas S. Gunnarsson; Bart Koelmans; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Contaminated Sediment Remediation; Activated Carbon; Benthic Community; Ecological Effects; Stress; Resilience; Contaminant Sequestration; Capping Efficiency; Bioavailability; Bioaccumulation; Sediment-to-water fluxes; marin ekotoxikologi; Marine Ecotoxicology;

    Sammanfattning : Hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) often reside in sediments sorbed to particles, most tightly to particles with high content of organic carbon. If persistent, such pollutants can accumulate in the sediment for many years and constitute a contamination risk for sediment-living organisms and organisms at higher trophic levels, including humans. 4. 4. Of Mangroves and Middlemen : A study of social and ecological linkages in a coastal community

    Författare :Beatrice Crona; Patrik Rönnbäck; Nils Kautsky; Neil Adger; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :mangroves; restoration; ecosystem goods and services; natural resource management; local ecological knowledge; social networks; social-ecological systems; East Africa; co-management; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis studies some of the links between the social and ecological components in a coastal Social-Ecological System (SES) of East Africa to gain insight into factors affecting natural resource management at a community level. It does so by assessing the return of ecosystem goods and services in restored mangroves through both ecological and socio-economic measurements, and by empirically studying variations and diversity in content of local ecological knowledge among resource users, its relation to valuation of ecosystem goods and services and its distribution across a social network. 5. 5. Mapping social-ecological systems and human well-being : A spatial exploration of the links between people and the environment in South Africa

    Författare :Maike Hamann; Reinette Biggs; Gretchen Daily; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Social-ecological; systems; ecosystem services; bundles; human well-being; mapping; South Africa; vetenskap om hållbar utveckling; Sustainability Science;

    Sammanfattning : It has become increasingly clear that dealing with present day environmental crises requires a holistic view that takes into account the interactions of social and ecological factors across multiple spatial and temporal scales. An example of where this new paradigm is being operationalized is the study of social-ecological systems. LÄS MER
