1. Stewardship in Swedish Baltic small-scale fisheries : A study on the social-ecological dynamics of local resource use
Sammanfattning : Sustainability scholars frequently advocate for stewardship as a strategy to foster sustainable development. Stewardship broadly refers to the wise and responsible use of nature, and is considered necessary to ensure the long-term wellbeing of humans and that of life in general. LÄS MER
2. Management Practices for Dealing with Uncertainty and Change : Social-Ecological Systems in Tanzania and Madagascar
Sammanfattning : The development of human societies rests on functioning ecosystems. This thesis builds on integrated theories of linked social-ecological systems and complex adaptive systems to increase the understanding of how to strengthen the capacity of ecosystems to generate services that sustain human well-being. 3. Learning ecosystem complexity : A study on small-scale fishers’ ecological knowledge generation
Sammanfattning : Small-scale fisheries are learning contexts of importance for generating, transferring, and updating ecological knowledge of natural environments through everyday work practices. The rich knowledge fishers have of local ecosystems is the result of the intimate relationship fishing communities have had with their natural environments across generations (see e. LÄS MER
4. Human Behaviour in Social-Ecological Systems : Insights from economic experiments and agent-based modelling
Sammanfattning : Progress towards sustainability requires changes in our individual and collective behaviour. Yet, our fundamental understanding of behaviour in relation to environmental change remains severely limited. LÄS MER
5. Of Mangroves and Middlemen : A study of social and ecological linkages in a coastal community
Sammanfattning : This thesis studies some of the links between the social and ecological components in a coastal Social-Ecological System (SES) of East Africa to gain insight into factors affecting natural resource management at a community level. It does so by assessing the return of ecosystem goods and services in restored mangroves through both ecological and socio-economic measurements, and by empirically studying variations and diversity in content of local ecological knowledge among resource users, its relation to valuation of ecosystem goods and services and its distribution across a social network.
