6. Circular design through co-creation: Exploring perspectives and future directions for design in a circular economy
Sammanfattning : In the efforts to stimulate sustainable development, the circular economy aims to establish ‘closed-loop’ flows of resources in a way that enables businesses and society to reap benefits from maintaining products, components and materials at their highest utility and value, while simultaneously reducing the generation of waste. Designing for a circular economy will require designers to, more than ever, anticipate how artifacts function and change over time and conceptualise the entire lifecycle (including the design, production, use and end-of-life phase) in a coherent and holistic way. 7. Distributed Participatory Design in Multidisciplinary Engineering Projects: Investigating a Sustainable Approach for Ship Design & Construction
Sammanfattning : Naval architecture design procedures focus primarily on the technical aspects of engineering specifications, mission requirements and overall survivability of ships and marine structures. In contrast, often little attention or importance is placed on the operational demands of onboard crew and the detailed design characteristics of a ship’s work environment. LÄS MER
8. Geometry linking the art of building and the Universe: Geometric patterns on shells and grid shells
Sammanfattning : Geometry links the art of building and the physics of space-time. Mathematical breakthroughs in geometry have led to new ways of designing our structures and our ability to visualise and describe the world, phenomena in nature and the universe. LÄS MER
9. Designing for Change in Complex Systems : Design Considerations for Uptime in a Transportation System with Driverless Vehicles
Sammanfattning : The transportation system is undergoing a transformation to enable socially, environmentally, and economically sustainable transport solutions, and driverless trucks are considered one innovation that can contribute to a more sustainable and efficient transportation system. Nevertheless, introducing driverless trucks will cause disruptions in the system, and one considerable change is that the driver is no longer present. LÄS MER
10. Designing out waste - Exploring barriers for material recirculation
Sammanfattning : This doctoral thesis has investigated what hinders material recirculation in society, to later suggest possible ways to support material recirculation in the future. Since material recirculation is proposed as a way to use waste materials for new production, it was deemed relevant to investigate two separate case studies that enabled recirculation from production systems and waste management.
