21. Evolution of the Neuropeptide Y and Opioid Systems and their Genomic Regions
Sammanfattning : Two whole genome duplications (2R) occurred early in vertebrate evolution. By using combined information from phylogenetic analyses and chromosomal location of genes, this thesis delineates the evolutionary history of two receptor-ligand systems that expanded by these large scale events. 22. Molecular population genetics of inducible defense genes in Populus tremula
Sammanfattning : Plant-herbivore interactions are among the most common of ecological interactions. It is therefore not surprising that plants have evolved multiple mechanisms to defend themselves, using both constitutive chemical and physical barriers and by induced responses which are only expressed after herbivory has occurred. 23. An evolutionary basis for protein design and structure prediction
Sammanfattning : The sequence diversity of protein families is a result of the biophysical selection pressures that shaped their evolutionary history. Among the dominant pressures is selection for protein thermostability, which in itself is an attractive target in protein engineering because of its importance for various biopharmaceutical properties, the performance of industrial enzymes, and the ability to design new protein functions. 24. Egg size evolution and paternal care in pipefishes
Sammanfattning : In this thesis I explore how sexual selection, sexual conflicts, coevolution with parental care and an environmental selective agent (hypoxia) affect the evolution of different egg characteristics and embryo survival and size in pipefishes (Syngnathidae). In the broad-nosed pipefish, Syngnathus typhle Linnaeus, both sexes prefer to mate with large partners; large females produce more and larger eggs and large males can care for more young, and, as shown in this thesis, invest more per embryo and provide better oxygenation during brooding. 25. Autonomous Systems in Society and War : Philosophical Inquiries
Sammanfattning : The overall aim of this thesis is to look at some philosophical issues surrounding autonomous systems in society and war. These issues can be divided into three main categories. The first, discussed in papers I and II, concerns ethical issues surrounding the use of autonomous systems – where the focus in this thesis is on military robots. LÄS MER
