  1. 6. Effects of environmental acoustic factors, individual differences and musical training on speech perception in simulated classrooms

    Författare :Douglas MacCutcheon; Robert Ljung; Daniel Västfjäll; Högskolan i Gävle; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; speech in noise; cognition; perception; musical training; spatial listening; virtual classroom environment; bakgrundsljud; kognition; taluppfattning; musikalisk träning; rumsligt lyssnande; virtuella klassrumsmiljöer; Hållbar stadsutveckling; Sustainable Urban Development;

    Sammanfattning : Formal learning takes place primarily through speech perception in classroom environments and is therefore dependent on the listener’s ability to cope with a number of acoustic factors that interfere with the speech signal. As classrooms are inclusive spaces accommodating learners with a broad range of abilities and backgrounds, this research investigated some of the ways in which individual differences in supporting cognitive skills are related to speech perception outcomes in various challenging acoustic environments. 2. 7. Hearing and cognition in speech comprehension. Methods and applications

    Författare :Mathias Hällgren; Stig Arlinger; Birgitta Larsby; Arne Leijon; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Aging; physiology; cognition; cognition disorders; dichotic listening tests; hearing loss; sensorineural; neuropsychological tests; speech perception; Audiology; Audiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Central auditory processing is complex and can not be evaluated by a single method. This thesis focuses on assessment of some aspects of central auditory functions by the use of dichotic speech tests and cognitive tests that tax functions important for speech processing. LÄS MER

  3. 8. Perceptual and Squared Error Aspects in Speech and Audio Coding

    Författare :Harald Pobloth; Bastiaan Kleijn; Gernot Kubin; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Signalbehandling; speech coding; audio coding; auditory models; perceptual distortion measures; squared error; Signalbehandling; Signal processing; Signalbehandling;

    Sammanfattning : In the process of quantization, speech and audio signals are changed. This thesis contains four papers concerned with comparing and minimizing different measures to quantify the changes introduced. Before quantization the signal can be transformed to another domain. Transforms related to the discrete Fourier transform allow for e. LÄS MER

  4. 9. The magic of matching – speech production and perception in language acquisition

    Författare :Lena F. Renner; Ulla Sundberg; Mattias Heldner; Marilyn Vihman; Daniel Swingley; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; First language acquisition; phonology; lexicon; vocabulary; speech production and perception; Phonetics; fonetik;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis investigates the relationship between speech production and speech perception in the early stages of phonological and lexical acquisition. Previous studies have mainly focused on independent investigations of speech production and perception abilities in language acquisition. LÄS MER

  5. 10. Effects of peripheral auditory adaptation on the discrimination of speech sounds

    Författare :Francisco Lacerda; Hartmut Traunmüller; Olle Engstrand; Björn Lindblom; Louis Pols; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Adaptation; discrimination; categorical perception; Phonetics; Fonetik; Phonetics; fonetik;

    Sammanfattning : This study investigates perceptual effects of discharge rate adaptation in the auditory-nerve fibers. Discrimination tests showed that brief synthetic stimuli with stationary formants and periodic source were better discriminated when they had an abrupt as opposed to a gradual onset (non-adapted vs adapted condition).
