11. Reproductive biotechnologies in Swedish male alpacas
Sammanfattning : Alpacas have become more popular during the last decades. The herds have been built up by importing live animals since reproductive biotechnologies, for example artificial insemination and semen preservation, are not well-developed in this species. LÄS MER
12. Working Animals and Skeletal Lesions : Paleopathology of Cattle and Horse in Iron Age and Medieval Öland, Sweden
Sammanfattning : Central to this thesis is the relationship between animal husbandry practices and the associated pathological conditions. Since bone elements from the extremities are subjected to abnormal load when animals are put to hard work this research aims to go further and interpret the prevalence of varying lesions and their connection with animal husbandry by using methods such as osteometric analysis, conventional radiograpic and bone mineral study, as well as incorporated molecular analysis. 13. Maternal behaviour, infanticide and welfare in enclosed European wild boars (Sus scrofa)
Sammanfattning : European wild boars (Sus scrofa) are kept in Swedish enclosures for hunting and meat production purposes. The sows are known to undergo behavioural changes in connection with farrowing and their natural behaviours may be compromised by the limited area of the enclosure. LÄS MER
14. Antibiotic Resistance : Selection in the Presence of Metals and Antimicrobials
Sammanfattning : The external environment is complex: Antibiotics, metals and antimicrobials do not exist in isolation but in mixtures. Human activities such as animal husbandry, fertilization of agricultural fields and human medicine release high amounts these compounds into the environment. LÄS MER
15. Home-cage monitoring of mouse behaviours across life-span
Sammanfattning : Background and aim: The academic research involving animal testing is struggling with problems of reproducibility and a few of the specific reasons pointed out are for example insufficient reporting of animal strains and protocol details. It is everyone’s responsibility to follow the 3R’s (Replace, Reduce, Refine) and to ensure that the model used is well characterized. LÄS MER
