21. Interactions between β-haemolytic streptococci and the human host. Heart, skin and beyond
Sammanfattning : Group C and G streptococci (GCS/GGS) and group A streptococci (GAS) belong to β-haemolytic streptococci (BHS). GCS/GGS can further be species determined to S. dysgalactiae, whereas S. pyogenes are GAS. LÄS MER
22. The diagnosis and protection of the auditory peripheral system
Sammanfattning : The main focus of this thesis is on the diagnosis and prevention of peripheral hearing loss. An auditory evoked response measure (forward masking) was developed that specifically tests the function of the inner hair cells, independently of the outer hair cells. LÄS MER
23. Determinants of peptidyl-tRNA drop-off from E. coli Ribosomes : Effects of antibiotics, mutations and translation factors
Sammanfattning : During protein synthesis, some peptidyl-tRNA molecules dissociate from the ribosomes and become hydrolysed by peptidyl-tRNA hydrolase (Pth). Two different in vitro systems, poly(U) and natural mRNA programmed ribosomes, have been used in order to determine dissociation (drop-off) rates of deacylated- and peptidyl-tRNAs from different sites on ribosomes. 24. Molecular basis for trimethoprim and sulphonamide resistance in Gram negative pathogens
Sammanfattning : Resistance to antibiotics is becoming an important global public health problem. Infectious diseases are still among the major causes of disease and death in many parts of the world and the possibilities to treat bacterial infections are now threatened due to the spread of antibiotic resistance. 25. Enterococci in Swedish intensive care units : studies on epidemiology, mechanisms of antibiotic resistance and virulence factors
Sammanfattning : The purpose of this thesis was to study enterococci in Sweden, their resistance to antibiotics in general and high-level gentamicin resistance (HLGR) in particular, with a special focus on the ICU setting. Dynamics of rectal colonisation during prolonged intensive care unit (ICU) stay was assessed. LÄS MER
