  1. 1. Hair cell regeneration in vestibular epithelia : a study in an in vitro model

    Författare :Mimmi Werner; Diana Berggren; Andrew Forge; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Vestibular hair cell; regeneration; transdifferentiation; proliferation; utricle; rat; oto-rhino-laryngologi; Oto-Rhino-Laryngology;

    Sammanfattning : BackgroundHair cells (HCs) are the sensory receptors in both the auditory and the vestibular organs of the inner ear. Supporting cells (SCs) are non-sensory cells embracing the HCs. Injuries of the HCs by aging, acoustic trauma or ototoxic drugs (mainly aminoglycosides, e.g. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Stem cell in-vitro strategies for the induction of sensory neurons for inner ear cell therapy

    Författare :Rouknuddin Qasim Ali; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : The cochlea, a part of the auditory system, is a complex structure consisting of several different types of cells including hair cells and spiral ganglion neurons. In mammals, the regenerative potential of hair cells and spiral ganglion neurons is lost soon after the birth and damage to any of these cells causes sensorineural hearing loss. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Hair cell and organ of corti responses to normal and intense acoustic stimulation

    Författare :Anders Fridberger; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Cochlea; outer hair cells; calcium; pressure changes; micromechanics; noise-induced hearing loss; fluorescent indicators; laser interferometry; temporal bone preparation; guinea pig;

    Sammanfattning : The principal aims of the studies described in this thesis were to develop an in vitro model for studying acoustic overstimulation at the cellular level, to define the electrical and mechanical response characteristics of the perfused temporal bone preparation, and to investigate the effects of intense sound stimulation on the calcium levels of the hair cells in the intact hearing organ. In the in vitro model for acoustic overstimulation, isolated cochlear outer hair cells were subjected to a pressure jet emanating from a glass micropipette aimed at the cell body. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Pharmacokinetics and inner ear transport of cisplatin

    Författare :Victoria Hellberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Cisplatin is a commonly used platinum anti-cancer drug. Regrettably cisplatin has dose-limiting ototoxic side effects, e.g. the drug can induce an irreversible hearing loss. LÄS MER

  5. 5. K+ channels in the inner ear : electrophysiological and molecular studies

    Författare :Guihua Liang; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Cochlea; gene expression; hair cell; immunohistochemistry; KCNQ; lead; M current; mercury; patch clamp; RT-PCR; voltage-gated potassium channels;

    Sammanfattning : Potassium channels are involved in several fundamental cellular processes. Heavy metals, such as mercury and lead, are widespread toxic pollutants and have been shown to act on various ion channels in the central nervous system. LÄS MER
