1. Physiological responses to acute physical and psychosocial stress- relation to aerobic capacity and exercise training
Sammanfattning : Exercise training is an effective method to promote health and to prevent development of disease. Both physical and mental health have been shown to benefit from exercise training. It has also been speculated that physical exercise might affect responses to acute psychosocial stress. LÄS MER
2. Mitochondrial function in human skeletal muscle: with special reference to exercise and training
Sammanfattning : The overall objective of this thesis was to study the adaptation of oxidative function in human skeletal muscle to acute exercise of different modes, intensities and durations, and to endurance training. The effects of endurance training on mitochondrial function were evaluated in cross-sectional and longitudinal studies by measurements of mitochondrial oxygen consumption in isolated mitochondria and permeabilised muscle fibres and measurements of mitochondrial ATP production rate in isolated mitochondria. 3. The Effects of Aerobic Exercise on Human Skeletal Muscle Adaptations to Resistance Exercise
Sammanfattning : Aerobic exercise (AE) may interfere with muscle adaptations induced by resistance exercise (RE). Three experimental campaigns were conducted to explore the influence of AE on molecular, functional and muscular adaptations to acute and chronic RE. Twenty-nine men performed unilateral knee extensor RE preceded by AE (AE+RE). LÄS MER
4. Community-based osteoporosis prevention: Physical activity in relation to bone density, fall prevention, and the effect of training programmes : The Vadstena Osteoporosis Prevention Project
Sammanfattning : This thesis is based on studies of the ten-year community-based intervention programme entitled, the Vadstena Osteoporosis Prevention Project (VOPP). The specific aims of the research were to describe the effects of physical activity and training programmes on bone mass and balance performance in adults, to determine whether a fall risk prevention programme could motivate personal actions among the elderly, to ascertain whether the intervention programme could reduce the incidence of forearm and hip fractures. 5. Efficiency of aerobic exercise training in women and men with chronic heart failure
Sammanfattning : The syndrome of heart failure is one of the major public health problems in many countries. Despite advances in pharmacological therapy, patients with chronic heart failure (CHF) are characterized by exercise intolerance and a reduced health-related quality of life. LÄS MER
