  1. 16. A Surface Phase Model of the Alveolar Lining: Ultrastructural Analysis and in vivo Applications

    Författare :Marcus Larsson; Lund Pediatrik; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; X-ray diffraction; cryo-TEM; dynamic swelling; ARDS; surface phase; surfactant replacement therapy; cholesterol; minimal surface; pulmonary surfactant; alveolar surface; Physiology; Fysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis the relation between lung surfactant structure and functional properties have been studied. Experimental results show that the alveolar surface is formed by a coherent surface phase with a structure equal to tubular myelin. The properties of this phase may explain certain unresolved issues in lung physiology, e.g. LÄS MER

  2. 17. Structural and Spectroscopic Studies of Solvated Metal Ions

    Författare :Alireza Abbasi; Magnus Sandström; Ernö Brucher; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Coordination; Solvation; X-ray diffraction; EXAFS; IR; Raman; Normal coordinate analysis; trivalent metal ions; dmso; triflate; hydration; Chemistry; Kemi;

    Sammanfattning : Crystallographic and spectroscopic studies have been performed of structures, coordination and chemical bonding for series of trivalent metal ions solvated by two oxygen-coordinating solvents, water and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). The hydrated scandium(III) and lanthanoid(III) ions, La to Lu, are surrounded by tricapped trigonal prisms of aqua ligands in the isomorphous series of trifluoromethanesulfonates, [M(H2O)n](CF3SO3)3. 3. 18. Exploiting reciprocal space : Electron diffraction, textures and precession

    Författare :Peter Oleynikov; Sven Hovmöller; Xiaodong Zou; Jean-Paul Morniroli; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; electron crystallography; electron diffraction; texture patterns; precession electron diffraction; Inorganic chemistry; Oorganisk kemi;

    Sammanfattning : Electron crystallography emerges as a new tool for accurate structure determination of very small crystals. In order to exploit the full potential of electron diffraction, the methods for data acquisition and processing have to be developed towards the high standards of X-ray crystallography. LÄS MER

  4. 19. Transthyretin from a structural perspective

    Författare :Andreas Hörnberg; Elisabeth Sauer-Eriksson; Hugo Monaco; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Cell and molecular biology; X-ray crystallography; amyloidosis; structural comparison; anomalous diffraction; Cell- och molekylärbiologi; Cell and molecular biology; Cell- och molekylärbiologi; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Sammanfattning : Conformational changes in human proteins can induce several types of diseases. The nature of the conformational changes is largely unknown, but some lead to amyloid fibril formation. Amyloid fibrils accumulate in the extra-cellular space of tissues resulting in disruption of organ function. LÄS MER

  5. 20. Tailoring of Transition Metal Silicides as Protective Thin Films on Austenitic Stainless Steel

    Författare :Eric Tam; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Rockwell-C adhesion test; X-ray diffractrometry XRD ; Pretorius’ effective heat of formation EHF model; Ion-beam sputter deposition IBSD ; Reciprocating sliding wear test; Corrosion; Stainless steels; Thin films; Tribology; Transition metal silicides; X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy XPS ; Potentiodynamic polarisation measurements;

    Sammanfattning : The objective of this study is to make use of transition metal silicides in a novel way as protective thin films on engineering metals. It can then be possible to take advantage of the potentially good corrosion resistance of metal silicides while compensating for their brittle nature by the ductile bulk material. LÄS MER
