1. Structural and Spectroscopic Studies of Solvated Metal Ions
Sammanfattning : Crystallographic and spectroscopic studies have been performed of structures, coordination and chemical bonding for series of trivalent metal ions solvated by two oxygen-coordinating solvents, water and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). The hydrated scandium(III) and lanthanoid(III) ions, La to Lu, are surrounded by tricapped trigonal prisms of aqua ligands in the isomorphous series of trifluoromethanesulfonates, [M(H2O)n](CF3SO3)3. 2. Quantum computing with naturally trapped sub-nanometre-spaced ions
Sammanfattning : The main aim of this work, was to lay the foundations for the experimental realisation of a quantum mechanical controlled NOT gate in rare-earth-metal-ion-doped crystals. Small amounts of rare-earth elements, added during the growth of some inorganic crystals, will become substituted into the crystal lattice as trivalent ions. LÄS MER
3. Structure of Rare-Earth Aluminosilicate Glasses Probed by Solid-State NMR Spectroscopy and Quantum Chemical Calculations
Sammanfattning : Aluminosilicate glasses incorporating rare earth elements feature highly beneficial physical and chemical properties, at the level beyond that accessible for compositions based on alkali and/or alkaline earth metals. Extraordinary hardness, high glass transition temperatures and indices of refraction, favorable coefficients of thermal expansion, as well as excellent chemical durability, result in many potential technological applications. 4. Structural aspects on some rare earth nitrate hydrates in the solid state
Sammanfattning : Structural information on different complexes is necessary for the understanding of coordination chemistry. The variety of molecular arrangements will increase with increasing coordination number of the central metal ion. LÄS MER
5. Structure and bonding of sulfur-containing molecules and complexes
Sammanfattning : Synchrotron-based spectroscopic techniques enable investigations of the many important biological and environmental functions of the ubiquitous element sulfur. In this thesis the methods for interpreting sulfur K-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectra are developed and applied for analyses of functional sulfur groups. LÄS MER
