1. Development and evaluation of non-invasive ultrasonic methods for arterial characterization
Sammanfattning : As cardiovascular diseases have been the most common cause of mortality in the western world for decades, the demand for appropriate diagnostic methods is obvious. To facilitate the examination non-invasive methods are preferable since they do not require sensors within the circulation system. LÄS MER
2. Water physiology in burn victims
Sammanfattning : Patients who sustain a burn injury of more than 20 - 30 % TBSA will, if untreated, develop burn shock within a couple of hours. Flcid is lost fi·om the vascular compartment due to suction from the interstitium of the wound and due to a generalised increase in vascular permeability. LÄS MER
3. Vibration exposure of the glabrous skin of the human hand
Sammanfattning : An occupational exposure to hand-arm vibration can cause a complex of neurological, vascular and musculo-skeletal disturbances, known as the 'vibration syndrome'. However, the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms are not at all clear. LÄS MER
4. Cardiovascular response to hyperoxemia, hemodilution and burns : a clinical and experimental study
Sammanfattning : The last decades less invasive monitoring and analytical tools have been developed for the evaluation of myocardial mechanics in clinical praxis. In critical care, these are longed-for complements to pulmonary artery catheter monitoring, additionally offering previously inaccessible information. LÄS MER
5. The Influence of Intrauterine Environment on Cardiovascular Development During Fetal Life
Sammanfattning : Fetal growth restriction has been linked to later cardiovascular disease, possibly through reduced arterial distensibility in response to a suboptimal intrauterine environment. This thesis sought firstly to examine the relationship between fetal growth and haemodynamics and their effect on later cardiovascular function and secondly to examine the effects of differential volume loading on arterial distensibility in genetically identical monochorionic twins with twin-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) and to explore the effect that early treatment has on vascular development.
