16. Effects of seed size and habitat on recruitment patterns in grassland and forest plants
Sammanfattning : A trade-off between seed size and seed number is central in seed ecology, and has been suggested to be related to a trade-off between competition and colonization, as well as to a trade-off between stress tolerance and fecundity. Large seeds endure hazards during establishment, such as shading, drought, litter coverage and competition from other plants, better than do small seeds, due to a larger amount of stored resources in the seed. 17. Nanoplasmonic Spectroscopy of Single Nanoparticles Tracking Size and Shape Effects in Pd Hydride Formation
Sammanfattning : Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) is a phenomenon of collective oscillation of conduction electrons in metal nanoparticles smaller than the wavelength of light that is used for its excitation. Plasmonic metal nanoparticles are able to confine light to extremely small volumes around them, i.e. below the diffraction limit. LÄS MER
18. A study of finite-size and non-perturbative effects on the van der Waals and the Casimir-Polder forces
Sammanfattning : This licentiate thesis addresses two important aspects of the van der Waals and the Casimir-Polder ground-state and excited-state (resonance) interactions between two atoms or molecules. The first is the finite-size effect and the second is the non-perturbative effect. LÄS MER
19. Ontogenetic bottlenecks : effects on intraguild predation systems and ecosystem efficiency
Sammanfattning : Size-dependent differences between individuals in size-structured organisms have fundamental effect on population and community dynamics. Intraguild predation (IGP) is one specifically interesting constellation that often arises when two size-structured populations interact. LÄS MER
20. Finding fitness : empirical and theoretical explorations of inferring fitness effects from population-level SNP data
Sammanfattning : The distribution of fitness effects (DFE) describes the likelihood that a new mutation has a specific effect on the fitness of an individual in a given population. The shape of the DFE is a result of several factors such as population size, mating system and selective environment, and can in turn influence the evolutionary potential of a species. LÄS MER
