16. Characterization of the prion protein in relation to normal cellular function and in disease
Sammanfattning : Transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs), also known as prion diseases, are a group of rare and fatal neurodegenerative disorders that can affect both human and animals. Evidence indicates that the key event in prion disease pathogenesis is the conformational conversion of the normal cellular prion protein (PrPC) into an aggregated isoform called the scrapie prion protein (PrPSc). 17. Neuropeptide expression in mouse disease models
Sammanfattning : The role of neuropeptides and the significance of peptidergic mechanisms in neurodegenerative diseases are still relatively unexplored. In the periphery, nerve injury results in dramatic changes in the expression of neuropeptides (and other molecules). LÄS MER
18. Intracellular pathways involved in formation and degradation of prions
Sammanfattning : Prions cause invariably fatal neurodegenerative diseases, in which a misfolded host-encoded protein appears to be the main, if not the only, component of the infectious agent. During disease, a normal cellular protein, PrPC, is converted to a disease-related isoform, PrPSc, by a post-translational process that might require auxiliary cellular cofactors. LÄS MER
19. Poly-and oligothiophenes : Optical probes for multimodal fluorescent assessment of biological processes
Sammanfattning : One interesting class of molecules in the research field of imaging biological processes is luminescent conjugated polythiophenes, LCPs. These fluorescent probes have a flexible backbone consisting of repetitive thiophene units. LÄS MER
20. Early events in disease associated protein misfolding
Sammanfattning : The scope of this thesis is to unravel some of the mysteries concerning events takingplace early in the amyloid cascade. In vitro studies of early misfolded states ofamyloidogenic proteins are important since the use of recombinant proteins allow us to monitor slight changes in environmental conditions as well as in amino acid composition and thereby illuminate the problem at near atomic resolution.
