  2. 2. Structures of some bacterial polysaccharides with focus on pneumococcal polysaccharides and their associated C-polysaccharide

    Författare :Camilla Karlsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Streptococcus pneumoniae; Pneumococcus; C-polysaccharide; Sphingomonas paucimoblis; Hafnia alvei; NMR spectroscopy; capsular polysaccharide; lipopolysaccharide; structure;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis describes the chemical structures of the capsular polysaccharides from Streptococcus pneumoniae types 18B, 32F, and 32A. The structure of the pneumococcal common antigen, C-polysaccharide, from a non-capsulated pneumococcal strain, CSR SCS2, is described and the structure of the C-polysaccharide associated with pneumococcal types 18B, 32F, and 32A. 3. 3. Characterization of host and microbe interactions affecting adherence, clearance and systemic spread of S. pneumoniae

    Författare :Sofia Dahlberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Streptococcus pneumoniae (the pneumococcus) mainly gives rise to diseases of the respiratory tract, such as pneumonia, acute otitis media and sinusitis, but it also causes severe invasive diseases, such as meningitis and sepsis. The pneumococcus accounts for approximately two million deaths world-wide every year, the majority of which are children in developing countries. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Linking innate and adaptive immunity to streptococcus pneumoniae

    Författare :Marie Olliver; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Streptococcus pneumoniae (the pneumococcus) most commonly colonizes the human nasopharyngeal mucosa without causing any symptoms. However, this organism has the potential to spread to normally sterile sites and cause pneumonia, meningitis or sepsis; diseases which are characterized by excessive inflammation. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Mechanisms for pneumococcal meningitis and a new vaccine platform to raise a serotype-independent protection in the host

    Författare :Sigrun Thorsdottir; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Streptococcus pneumoniae is a highly relevant pathogenic bacterium, responsible for a large fraction of deaths and disease morbidity in the world. The pneumococcus remains the leading cause of life-threatening pneumonia, septicemia and meningitis beyond neonatal age, despite global implementation of vaccination programs. LÄS MER
